About 820,000 people visited Death Valley National Park in 2020. This was about half the number of people that visited the park the previous year. As the weather started to cool down, Americans resumed traveling to Death Valley. 67,000 people visited in October, down 52% from the previous year. As temperatures cooled even more, November 2020 was a tie for the park’s busiest November, with 132,000 visits. Campgrounds and lodging in the park closed on December 7 in response to California’s Regional Stay-at-Home Orders. In spite of the lack of overnight accommodations, 94,000 people visited in December, which was the park’s third-busiest December. 2021: The Regional Stay-at-Home Orders were in effect until late January, yet visitation remained high, with 80,000 visits. ....
COVID-19 Rates Continue Encouraging Trend At the L.A. County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, County Director of Public Health Dr. Barbara Ferrer said that she was “encouraged by the significant reduction in new cases.” In recent weeks, daily average cases have dropped from approximately 15,000 to 7,000. This trend line is evident in hospitalizations. The County’s death rate remains very high, as it is a lagging indicator, and high numbers of deaths will likely continue for the next several weeks but should begin to drop in February. However, on January 30, 2021, the L.A. County Department of Public Health confirmed the second case of the U.K. COVID-19 variant (B.1.1.7) detected in the County. According to the County, “presence of the B.1.1.7 variant in Los Angeles County means virus transmission can happen more easily, and residents and businesses must more diligently implement and follow all of the personal protective actions and safety ....
February 3, 2021 A new poll shows Governor Gavin Newsom’s popularity slipping in the Golden State, while the effort to recall him as governor gains traction among California voters. Mark DiCamillo, director of the Berkeley IGS Poll, says it’s a clear sign the honeymoon period is over.
The survey of more than 10,000 registered California voters conducted by the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies last week found that just 46% say they currently approve of the Democrat’s job performance. DiCamillo says the main reason voters cited for Newsom’s falling approval rating is his handling of the pandemic, including the delayed COVID vaccine roll out and confusion over the rules for the Regional Stay-At-Home Orders for businesses. More than 1.3 million signatures have already been collected in an effort to replace Newsom, but another 200,000 need to be collected to trigger a recall. Those signatures will also need to be certified by the Secretary of Stat ....
Most Counties to Remain in Most Restrictive Tier of the State’s Blueprint As California begins to see the recent surge in COVID-19 infections recede, the state is lifting some of the most stringent restrictions on economic and social activities. On Monday, January 25, 2021, Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced that the state would be lifting the regional Stay-at-Home Orders put in place on December 3, 2020, to slow the spread of COVID-19. The orders applied to regions where ICU bed availability was severely limited. The Sacramento region had previously seen its regional order lifted on January 12, 2021, and the Northern California region never had an order imposed, as ICU capacity there remained above the 15% threshold. According to projections released today by CDPH, all five regions of the state are now above 15%, with a statewide average capacity of 30.3%. ....
