The Department of Health is coordinating with school officials to encourage students to submit to primary series and booster doses as preparations for the opening of classes, especially with the full in-person setting in November.(PNA photo by PGLena) ILOILO CITY - The Department of Health in Western Visayas (DOH-6) has assured enough supply of Covid-19 vaccines as it continues to closely coordinate with school officials to encourage students to get the primary series and booster shots in preparations for the full face-to-face classes in November. Data from the Department of Education Western Visayas (DepEd-6) showed that as of June 27 this year, 404,645 learners in the region have availed of their first dose, and 376,161 are fully vaccinated out of their 2,102,865 recorded learners. DOH WV Center for Health Development (DOH-6) OIC Assistant Regional Director Dr. Sophia Pulmones said on Wednesday they continue to encourage, especially those 5 to 11 years old, to avail of the vaccination to increase the coverage for the age group. Of the 756,418 targets for the 5 to 11 age group, 383,372, or 50.68 percent have received their first dose, and 307,833, or 40.70 percent are fully vaccinated. The 12-to 17-age group has a high inoculation accomplishment reaching 126.42 percent for the first dose, and 116.89 percent for fully vaccinated, according to the DOH Regional Vaccination Operations Center report as of July 25. "We have no problems with the supply of vaccines. We have enough vaccines for our target population for primary and booster dose," Pulmones said. For the 5 to 11 age group, there are 129,728 doses of available vaccines and 637,679 doses for the 12 to 17 years old. Pfizer will be administered to the learners. On Tuesday, students from the Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus joined the launching of the "PinasLakas" vaccination campaign and encouraged other learners to submit get their Covid-19 shots. "Let us get boosted, especially that the face-to-face classes will already resume to ensure that you are safe as well as your peers in school," said incoming Grade 12 learner Reah Joy Repospolo, 17, in an interview. Incoming Grade 10, Franchess Dianne Artillero, 15 said the booster shot provides people with extra protection. "Hopefully they can already make up their mind to get vaccinated because it is also for their own good and it can help speed up development of the country because we can all go out," she added. Incoming Grade 8, Kaycee Pernito, 14, said she availed of the booster dose to prepare for the face-to-face classes. (PNA) }

Health workers, heroes of this generation: NTF chief

(File photo) MANILA - The work and sacrifices of healthcare workers and front-liners in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic have saved millions of lives, making them heroes of this generation, National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. said Thursday. Galvez, who is also the vaccine czar, said everyone played a crucial role in the success of the government's coronavirus response and vaccination program. "Sa gitna ng ating laban kontra sa Covid-19, umusbong ang mga bagong bayaning tulad ninyo na isinantabi ang inyong mga personal na kapakanan at kaligtasan para sa ating mga mahal na kababayan. Kayo ang mga tunay na bayani ng henerasyong ito (Amid our fight against Covid-19, new heroes like you have emerged and you have set aside your personal gains and safety for our beloved countrymen. You are the real heroes of this generation)," Galvez said. He praised health personnel and volunteers of the Centers for Health Development (CHD) and Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) as well as the front-liners from local government units, the security sector, and various national government line agencies, for helping the country reach the significant numbers in the vaccination program, achieving milestones for population protection. "Nang dahil sa inyo, milyon milyong buhay ang ating nailigtas mula sa Covid-19. Kayo ang patunay na walang imposible kung tayong lahat ay magkakaisa, magtutulungan, at higit sa lahat, buo ang adhikaing magsilbi sa bayan (Because of you, we have saved millions of lives against Covid-19. You are the epitome that there's nothing impossible if everyone will work together, unite, helping each other and most of all, with high spirit to serve the country)," Galvez said. Apart from the contribution of healthcare workers, Galvez also thanked Filipinos for adhering to the government health protocols and availing the Covid-19 vaccines. The latest data from the National Vaccination Operations Center showed a total of 153,109,942 doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered nationwide, with 70,145,312 Filipinos having completed primary series of the jab and 14,754,943 fully vaccinated having first booster shots. Senior citizens in Antique to help in vax drive

VAX CAMPAIGN. Officers of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (FSCAP) Antique Chapter meet to discuss how they could help with the vaccination campaign of the provincial government on Friday (March 25, 2022). FSCAP president Edgar Maghari said they will conduct an advocacy campaign to raise the vaccination accomplishment of their sector.(PNA photo by Annabel Consuelo J. Petinglay) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - A group of senior citizens has expressed willingness to help raise the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination accomplishment of their sector in the province. The Antique Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (FSCAP) Antique chapter president Edgar Maghari, in an interview Friday, said they will be working closely with local health officers during their advocacy campaign since they have difficulty in explaining technical questions being raised by their peers. "We found it hard to explain the advantages and disadvantages of Covid-19 vaccination among our fellow seniors so what we will do now is to coordinate and facilitate the venue for the health officers to campaign," he said. Maghari added that, together with their municipal counterparts, they will call on senior citizens to a meeting with local health officers to convince the elderly to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. He cited a high negative perception of the Covid-19 vaccination among seniors, especially in far-flung areas, who could rarely be reached by the Department of Health (DOH) information campaign posted through social media. "There had also been low Covid-19 cases in the remote areas that is why the seniors don't see the need for vaccination," he said. The FSCAP will be embarking on the campaign in response to the appeal of Governor Rhodora Cadiao for those unvaccinated to submit to the inoculation. Meanwhile, the Liga ng Barangay (LnB) in Antique will meet on April 6 to discuss their strategy to entice more elderly to get the Covid-19 jab. "We will conduct a more frequent house-to-house campaign among seniors," said LnB president Pamela Socorro Azucena in a separate interview. A report generated by the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) as of 3 a.m. Friday showed that of the 62,029 target A2 population in Antique, 31,105 or 50.15 percent have at least one dose; 29,996 or 48.36 percent are fully vaccinated; and 5,614 or 9.05 percent already had their booster dose. W. Visayas caregivers to help seniors get vaxxed

A2 VACCINATION. Vaccination for the A2 population in Western Visayas is yet to reach the 70 percent target of the 864,891 eligible senior citizens. The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) is now reaching out to their carers and children to help convince unvaccinated senior citizens to get vaccinated.(PNA photo screenshot of RVOC report) ILOILO CITY - The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) is seeking the help of caregivers and children of senior citizens to encourage the sector to get vaccinated. DOH WV CHD Nurse 5 Mariebe Adrias, in an interview on Friday, said inoculating the A2 or senior citizen sector is one challenge that they are facing in the region. "We could not reach the target for our senior citizens and that's primarily caused by misinformation, vaccine hesitancy, fear of side effects by our elderly and it is also relatively influenced by their capacity. For example, if they are living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas they will find it difficult to go to our vaccination sites," she said. Adrias said they are focused on demand-generation efforts, which is educating their carers and their children to convince them of the effects of vaccination. "When we educate the carers and children of those senior citizens, they might help us in convincing their parents above 60 years old to get vaccinated," she added. It is done through house-to-house activities where information and education campaign (IEC) materials are distributed, counseling and dialogue. To fight misinformation on social media, DOH has already released information video, info-graphics, and weekly presser to discuss in native language updates on vaccination and reminders to the audience. Already, DOH has been collaborating with local government units for their support from mayors down to the barangay officials. Likewise, the resources such as vaccine logistics and personnel, are focused on areas with low inoculation accomplishment, Adrias said. As of Friday, the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) report showed that 550,227 or 63.62 percent of the target 864, 891 senior citizens in the region are already fully vaccinated and 111,851 or 12.93 percent have availed of their booster dose. Adrias said that based on the latest resolution of the national inter-agency task force, vaccination for the elderly is one of the criteria in identifying the alert level system of local government units. Antique and Negros Occidental have yet to reach the 70 percent target vaccination for their A2 population, which is a factor why they cannot be placed under Alert Level 1 classification. (PNA) }

Iloilo Province vax drive to target senior citizens

A2 VACCINATION. Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. said the provincial government will refocus its vaccination program to reach out to more senior citizens. In his regular press conference on Thursday (March 3, 2022), he said the vaccination coverage for the elderly is low, citing vaccine hesitancy and access among the reasons.(PNA file photo) ILOILO CITY - The Iloilo provincial government will refocus its vaccination drive to reach out to senior citizens or the A2 sector who until now have yet to receive the shot against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., in his press conference on Thursday, said many senior citizens in the province are not inoculated citing vaccine hesitancy and access as among the reasons. "In Iloilo province we are aligned with the WHO (World Health Organization and the DOH (Department of Health) in refocusing and intensifying our vaccination for our A2. We have taken significant steps. We have hired vaccinators as much as we can using the resources of the province so that we can increase the vaccination capacity of our municipalities," he said. Data from the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) showed that as of Feb. 28, 2022, 65.97 percent or 154,198 of the target elderly have their first dose and 145, 278 or 62.15 percent have availed of their second dose. In terms of access, he said the provincial government has already taken steps such as bringing the vaccination to the barangays. "We have graduated from the vaccination sites to the vaccination to the barangays," the governor said. He added that on February 25, the province also launched the EDSA People Power Resbakuna and took it as an opportunity to appeal for people power for the vaccination program, which already covered the general community. The national vaccination day on March 10 will also focus on the elderly. The provincial government is now coordinating with the DOH and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on how to convince and gather more elderly. They will be coming up with activities and provide incentives that will be detailed in the Executive Order (EO) that will soon be released by the governor. (PNA) }

Modular hospital, vax prepare Iloilo City for new normal

GEARING UP FOR NEW NORMAL. Employees of the Iloilo City Hall for the first time this year hold in-person flag-raising ceremony on Monday (Feb. 28, 2022). In his message during the ceremony, Mayor Jerry Trenas urged the eligible population to get their booster dose as he also campaigned for children aged 5 to 11 years old to submit to the inoculation. (PNA photo courtesy of Arnold Almacen/City Mayor's Office) ILOILO CITY - The local government here will be ready to face the new normal once the 76-bed modular hospital, which was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in this city's Barangay So-oc in Arevalo district, complies with the additional health requirements. Mayor Jerry Trenas said he requested that the city be placed under Alert Level 2 as the local government is in the process of complying with the additional requirements of the Department of Health (DOH) for the modular hospital to be issued with a permit to operate. The City Engineer's Office, he said, has committed to complete these requirements in one week. "We will be having 33 initially additional beds for Covid (coronavirus disease 2019) and after two weeks, we will have additional 44 so 77 beds for Covid-19 positive patients," he said in his message during the city government's first face-to-face flag-raising ceremony for this year. The city government has already hired medical personnel with augmentation from the DOH to be supervised by The Medical City Iloilo. Under the new normal, Trenas said offices, transport, and businesses can already operate at 100-percent capacity. However, he said the public will continue to wear masks even under the new normal. Meanwhile, Trenas cited the slow administration of booster shots and pediatric vaccination for 5 to 11 years old. To ensure higher coverage rate, the city vaccinators will reach out to establishments and sectors that are yet to receive their booster dose. They will also coordinate with schools so they can gather their learners who are eligible for the vaccination. "We want them to go back to schools. We want them to get vaccinated so that at the earliest time once Iloilo will be on Alert Level 1, we should already go back to school. That's the only way to give them protection so that once they go back to school, they already have protection," he said. Data from the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) showed that the city has a coverage rate of 122.14 percent equivalent to 472,032 eligible population who received their Covid-19 doses on Monday. However, 118,689 got their booster dose. (PNA) }

Iloilo province to hold 'People Power Resbakuna'

PEOPLE POWER RESBAKUNA. The Iloilo provincial government serves employees of the provincial capitol and the general public as part of the "People Power Resbakuna" on February 21. The program will be officially launched on Friday (Feb 25, 2022) in celebration of the 36th Edsa People Power Revolution anniversary. (PNA photo courtesy of Iloilo Provincial Health Office/Balita Halin Sa Kapitolyo FB page) ILOILO CITY - The province of Iloilo will launch its 'People Power Resbakuna' on Friday in celebration of the 36th Edsa People Power Revolution in connection with this year's theme "EDSA 2022: Pagtutulungan Tungo sa Sama-Samang Pagbangon mula sa Pandemya." "It is People Power Resbakuna because we have come to a point that we have already vaccinated our sectors; we started with A1 and if you remember our last launching was for the 5 to 11 (years old). Now, vaccination of the general community and we call it People Power Resbakuna," said Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. in his press conference on Thursday. The launch is open to registered and walk-in clients of all age groups ranging from the pediatric population of 5 to 11, minors aged 12 to 17 and those 18 years old and above for first, second, and booster doses at the lobby of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Data from the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) showed that 64.22 percent of the province's 1,670,578 target eligible population are already fully vaccinated, 6.60 percent are partially vaccinated and 29.18 percent have yet to get inoculated as of February 21. The governor admitted that the challenge of hesitancy remains a problem in the vaccination campaign. For the past several days, Defensor said he observed the slow increase in the number of those getting their first dose. He said that the "People Power Resbakuna" is one of the strategies that is expected to raise the vaccination accomplishment. "We try to be as innovative and as creative as we can. We try to motivate, we try to convince our constituents," he added. The provincial government is also planning to hold vaccination campaigns in construction sites, and terminals, among others, to make it more convenient. Regular vaccination is available at the Robinsons Place Pavia every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday and the West Visayas State University Cultural Center every Friday. Meanwhile, children aged 5 to 11 who will avail of the vaccination on Friday are advised to bring their birth certificate, valid ID with picture, valid ID of parent or guardian with picture, and medical certificate for those with comorbidities. On February 21, the provincial government has initially opened the 'People Power Resbakuna' to employees of the provincial capitol and the general public. (PNA) }

W. Visayas records negative growth rate in Covid-19 cases

Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development senior health officer John Richard Lapascua (Photo by Perla Lena) ILOILO CITY - Cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in Western Visayas are declining as shown by the negative 74 percent growth rate in the past one to two weeks when compared with the number of cases in the last three to four weeks. During the virtual press briefing Monday, Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) senior health officer John Richard Lapascua said the region's average daily cases as of February 20 dropped to 452 when compared with 828 cases in January. The average daily attack rate in the region is low in provinces and highly urbanized cities, except for this city that recorded 11.36, which is considered under moderate risk classification. "If we sum that up together with the risk classification, the alert level that we recommend is Level 2 in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental; Level 1 in Bacolod City; and Level 3 for Iloilo City. On the average for the whole region, our alert system is Level 2 as of Feb. 20, 2022," he said. The region's health care utilization rate as of Sunday was at low risk with 879 or 35.39 percent of the 2,484 beds dedicated to Covid-19 are occupied and 27 of the 185 mechanical ventilators are utilized. In terms of temporary treatment and monitoring facilities (TTMF) of local government units (LGUs), only 650 out of the 16,363 beds, or 3.98 percent are occupied. He said the declining cases could be attributed to the observance of minimum public health standards (MPHS), increased awareness on the transmission of the Omicron variant, and movement restrictions since Western Visayas was placed under Alert Level 3 from January 16 until February 20. Lapascua said that amid the declining cases, they continue to campaign for vaccination, especially for booster shots. "The booster dose is another layer of protection. It adds to the efficiency or efficacy of our primary series vaccines," he said. In its report as of 3 a.m. of February 21, the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) said that of the 4,519,101 who were fully vaccinated, only 499,719 or 7.78 percent have booster shots. Meanwhile, Lapascua said the pediatric vaccination for the 5 to 11 and 12-17 age groups has a "good response". The RVOC data showed that 27.55 percent or 24,964 target pediatric 12 to 17 age group with comorbidity and 85.9 percent or equivalent to 700,560 for the rest of the pediatric population (ROPP) of the same age group have their first dose. For the second dose, 17,904 of the 12-17 age group with comorbidities and 626, 230 for the ROPP have already received their second dose. For 5 to 11 years old, 26,879 or 2.49 percent of the over 1 million target for Western Visayas availed of their first dose during the first seven days of the rollout. He attributed the high turnout for the pediatric vaccination to the willingness and acceptance of parents and their children to get inoculated. (PNA) }
