The World Heritage Convention was created in 1972 – nearly half a century ago – as a legal instrument to protect our most outstanding cultural and natural sites around the world. It has been adopted since by 194 countries, nearing universality. Concretely, the World Heritage Convention is implemented in myriad ways, big and small, by people around the world.
In this issue, we introduce you to numerous individuals who dedicate their careers – even their lives – to taking care of these precious and fragile sites. This includes site managers on the ground, young people who run projects for hands-on heritage conservation or awareness raising to save sites, and civil society activists who protect sites, and the people who live near them, in difficult conditions. ....

World Heritage Centre - Central Africa World Heritage Forest Initiative (CAWHFI)


Covering an area estimated at 1.62 million km2, the forests of Central Africa are home to vital biodiversity for the planet and play a central role in climate regulation and carbon sequestration.
The presence of eleven natural World Heritage sites in this region testifies to the exceptional importance of these forests for global biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. A living space for more than 30 million inhabitants, the region faces various threats such as poaching, deforestation by agro-industry (oil palm and rubber), illegal exploitation of natural resources (timber, minerals, wildlife, etc.) and infrastructure projects (dams, roads).
The conservation, sustainable exploitation and management of forest sites in Central Africa, and in particular in Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and the Central African Republic, have since 2004 benefited from the activities of the Central Africa World Heritage Forest Initiative (CAWHFI), which aims to strengthen the management of protected ar ....

After a closure of more than ten years, the Lopé National Park Ecomuseum reopened its doors on 5 February 2021 with an official ceremony attended by the Executive Secretary and staff of the National Parks Agency (ANPN), local authorities and the head of culture from the UNESCO office in Libreville.
This important building is of great pedagogical interest for learning about conservation through the valorization of history and the close relationship maintained by local communities with the Ecosystem and Relict Cultural Landscape of Lopé-Okanda, a mixed site inscribed on the World Heritage List since 2007. It is in this iconic site that the oldest evidence of human presence in the Congo Basin was discovered. ....
