HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai County announced that a new rental and utility assistance program will launch in the first week of May.
The county said the program is designed to help Kauai and Niihau residents, especially renters and landlords, who have struggled to pay rent and utilities due to a loss of income during the pandemic.
Eligible applicants may receive up to $2,000 per month for rent and up to $400 per month for qualifying utilities. Information is required from both tenants and landlords in order for an application to be completed and qualify for the program. ....

Leaders of Hawai i island s burial grounds are urging state lawmakers to investigate what they say is systemic and chronic mismanagement by the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD). The heads of the state s island burial councils organized a statewide protest this week. Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, chairwoman of the O ahu Island Burial Council, says some of the issues that continute to plague SHPD are preventing her and her fellow councilmembers from doing their job.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Over the course of the pandemic, thousands of renters who couldn’t pay their monthly bills applied for help from the state’s Rent, Relief & Housing Assistance Program.
Nearly 13,000 renters actually received the benefit, which was funded by CARES Act money and was paid out directly to their landlords.
In all, more than 18,000 people applied for relief ― and many of them inadvertently exposed landlords who didn’t have General Excise Tax licenses and had likely been able to avoid paying taxes on rent revenue. ....
