SP member Leijten who exposed childcare benefits scandal leaves the Tweede Kamer after 17 years

SP member of parliament Renske Leijten is leaving the Tweede Kamer next week after seventeen years, according to her party. In her own words, Leijten feels it is "time to step out of the bubble in The Hague and engage with our democracy differently." Leijten did not disclose what the next steps in her political career would be, however, she will continue to be active for the SP. "It's time to go back to real society and organize people there," she said about her future.

Opposition criticizes gov't response to benefits scandal; Rutte again asks for patience

Opposition parties in the Tweede Kamer had no good word for how the Cabinet responded to a harsh report on the childcare allowance scandal, which was published at the end of 2020. Few of the promises made by Prime Minister Mark Rutte at the time have materialized, according to MPs from various factions during a parliamentary debate on the matter. Rutte continued to ask those affected by the scandal for patience. Parents sometimes loudly expressed their dissatisfaction from the public gallery.

Dutch scandal serves as a warning for Europe over risks of using algorithms

MPs are expected to abolish 'unfair' tax on dogs

A majority of MPs back abolishing the tax on dogs, following a petition signed by 60,000 dog owners.
MPs will be discussing the matter in parliament on Thursday in a debate opened by dog owner Gary Yanover who initiated a so-called ‘burgerinitiatief’ (citizens intitiative) to put the matter on the political agenda. A burgerinitiatief needs at least 40,000 signatories to force a parliamentary debate.
‘This tax is unfair. One local council does not tax dog ownership and the next charges €125,’ Yanover told RTL Nieuws. He also said that dog owners have a legal obligation to clear up after their dogs and claimed local councils are using the tax as an excuse to increase their budget.
