The High Court reserved its judgment on the petition filed by Panchayat Raj & Rural Development Minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy against the State Election Commission’s order that he should not speak to the media till February 21.
A division bench of the court, led by Chief Justice Arup Kumar Goswami and Justice C. Praveen Kumar, heard the arguments on both sides on Tuesday and reserved their verdict following an undertaking given on behalf of the Minister that he would not make inciteful remarks against the SEC.
It may be noted that the High Court dismissed the SEC order for confining Mr. Ramachandra Reddy to his residence till February 21 for vitiating the gram panchayat elections by allegedly threatening the District Collectors and other officials on election duty and making objectionable comments in the media. ....

NEW YORK: Desperate for relief from the worst pandemic in a century, countries have struck deals to secure access to life-saving vaccines. By Bloomberg’s count, 8.56 billion doses have already been reserved.
That would be enough to cover more than half the world’s population (most vaccines use two doses), if the shots were distributed evenly. That, however, hasn’t happened. Rich countries have accumulated extensive supply deals. Some countries may have to wait until 2022 or later before supplies are widely available.
AstraZeneca’s two-dose shot was the early leader, with pre-purchase agreements that would cover 1.52 billion people more than twice as many as any other candidate. After its clinical trials were faulted for mistakes in design and execution, other vaccines were first to reach widespread use, including shots made by Novavax, Pfizer and BioNTech, and Russia’s Gamaleya. In total, Bloomberg has identified more than 110 agreements. Not ever ....

LAHORE:The Lahore High Court on Monday reserved verdict on a habeas corpus petition against the alleged illegal detention of five persons including students as the police said the detainees had been discharged.
Haider Ali Butt, a student, filed the petition for the recovery of his fellows Zubair Siddiqui, Sanaullah, Ali Ashraf, Salman Sikandar and Haris Asad who were allegedly picked up by the police following a widespread protest against on-campus examination by some private universities.
On being summoned, the investigating officer appeared before Justice Ali Baqar Najafi and stated that the petition stood infructuous since the alleged detainees had been discharged of the cases. Advocate Usama Khawar Ghumman, on behalf of the petitioner, argued that the police officials involved in the illegal detention of the students should not be spared and needed to be punished under the law. ....

LAHORE:The Lahore High Court on Tuesday reserved verdict on the maintainability of a petition against Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for holding its protest outside the building of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
After hearing initial arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, Justice Shahid Jamil Khan reserved his verdict on the point of the jurisdiction of the court to entertain such petition. Muneer Ahmad moved the petition through Advocate Azhar Siddique saying the PDM’s protest was illegal and against the spirit of Article 16 of the Constitution, which provides the citizens fundamental right of assembly and the public order of the society. ....
