Southern Nigeria: Of Federalism and Conservative Rumblings, By Dakuku Peterside

Southern Nigeria: Of Federalism and Conservative Rumblings, By Dakuku Peterside
Many stakeholders in Nigeria have concluded that the country presently does not seem to be working.

The governors also stated that the Federal Government should take urgent and bold steps to restructure the Nigerian federation. This restructuring should lead to the evolution of state police, a review of the revenue allocation formula in favour of the sub-national governments and creation of other institutions, which legitimately advance our commitment to and practice of true federalism.
The amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates in 1914 to form the Nigerian state seems unfinished. Since this union, there has been constant and continuous agitation for a national debate, under different names, to discuss the existence and future of the country. During periods of crisis, these divergent protectorates, although done away with on paper, approach national issues and challenges through the prism of the self-interest of these dichotomous areas.

Breaking News | We're not insurgents, says OPC faction

Late Founder of Oodua People Congress (OPC), Dr Fredrick Fasehun
The Late Dr Frederick Fasehun-led faction of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), has faulted a statement credited to former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Interior, retired Lt. Gen. Abdurahman Dambazau, describing the group as terrorists.
The OPC faction in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday by its newly elected  President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, said it was not proper for the ex- army chief to equate the group with activities of Boko  Haram insurgents.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Dambazau had said the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and OPC shared similarities with the insurgent Boko Haram.

THE ARTFUL DODGER OF DOOM

Kunle Jenrola tasks leaders to do more to stem the move toward disintegration
Ever wondered why Extreme Sports or Tensioned Adventures such as Bungee- Jumping or Highwire/Tightrope Walking do not appeal to Africans as a pastime.
It even arouses curiosity that Africans have yielded their heat -baked terrain suitable for the high octane “extreme motor rally” to the adrenaline- rush seeking Europeans and Americans.
The reasons for this apparent aversion for nerve- racking recreation may well be that most Africans have sufficient “extreme” socio-economic and political challenges to grapple with; thereby making any “tension-soaked leisure” an indulgent art.
It could also be that, by nature and nurture, we are wired not to join issues with mother earth.

PGF DG condemns NLC’s silence on restructuring, food blockade

By Omeiza Ajayi, ABUJA
Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum PGF, Salihu Moh. Lukman has condemned the silence of organised labour amidst debates regarding restructuring and in the face of the recent food blockade from the North to the South.
Lukman in a lengthy statement on Sunday in Abuja said the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC is fixated on having a non-implementable, uniform, national minimum wage instead of admitting that Nigeria’s existing framework is defective and seeking ways of dismantling it to allow for devolution of powers.

Buba Galadima: Between statesmanship and pretence | International Centre for Investigative Reporting

By Owei LAKEMFA
AN old friend and fellow journalist, Ya’u Shehu Darazo, called me in 2006 asking if I could arrange a meeting between former Head of State, retired General Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.
Buhari who was running in the 2007 Presidential elections, was accompanied to the meeting by Darazo and a man introduced as Engr. Buba Galadima.
Where Buhari was slow and deliberate in speech, Galadima spoke like a man running a commentary. He appeared confident, knowledgeable and full of ideas. At the end of the meeting, I joked with Darazo that he was selling two presidential candidates as their party could easily switch Buhari for Galadima.

food production and energy production. i'm interested how you reconcile the current ambition to have resource control, which is different than 10,000 years ago with your narrative that suggests we could make that transition. >> one of the reasons people are fatalistic about war is they they war is part of human nature. that's very easily refuted by looking at the variation in levels of violence. the second most popular theory is that its resource competition. that leads to conflict. the problem is if you look at the had historical record and analyze it statistically, that turns out to not be the case. there are some wars where there is competition for resources. oil, for example, or land. but there are many warsç where that is not an issue. the interesting thing it about war is it's almost an independent variable.
