Actually, quite a bit closer to the coastline. we re still deepwater, about 2,500 meters. and really, we had other problems related to equipment and things like that that were really making our lives difficult. and wile we were out there for about 40 days, we were chased twice by two cyclones. that s the australian version of a hurricane. and they didn t damage us or anything like that, but they moved us off-station and ate up a lot of our time. so you were not in as deep of water, but pretty deep water. let s talk about the retrieval of the black boxes out of that water. how long did it take you? oh, to find these two shipwrecks? yeah. well, actually, we found them quite quickly. we had to find the german one first. this is the one that sank the sydney and find the sydney after that. and we found the german wreck, i believe, in 64 hours, and sydney ....

Airplane. sorry. forget that we had two johns here. in your view, with the retrieval of these items, tell us what the sequence of erchs will be, once they collect them how does anyone discern what it is, what it means, what they re looking for in order to identify these objects? you would bring in all the personnel from boeing who understand every piece of that aircraft and each part of the aircraft is marked. not only with a number but also the boeing on it so it can be identified. back in twa 800 when we put that back together, i was the director of atf at the time and we worked closely with the fbi and with all of the ntsb, all the agencies involved, and piece by piece put it back together. if we re that lucky this time, then we ll be able to, just as we were with tw 800, say it was ....

Place ready to retrieve them is a promising sign but still a lot of work ahead. all right, will ripley, thanks so much. let s talk more about the retrieval of these objects and what happens from this point. john is a former ntsb board member and aviation safety expert. david is a cnn safety analyst and john is a security analyst and former tsa undersecretary. good to see all of you, gentlemen. john, why don t i begin with you? how encouraging is this to you that there are these objects? we know at least about the color of the objects, them being white, orange, red. but no real confirmation of what they have retrieved. well, the it is encouraging. i m sorry, john goalia. i m sorry. it is encourage that we are getting some debris. and i hope that it is from the airplane so that we can start narrowing the search down. but given all the effort that s put into this i have no doubt we re going to get to that ....

Way and that can t be easy. i don t think we d expect them to get it thoift water. i think we d expect them to help us with the identification in terms, is it pieces of the aircraft? and then we would or the investigators, whichever country would be the closest, would get a ship out there that has a deck on it that then the helicopters could fly on and off of and you could do some kind of retrieval work at that point and better identification. you ll have to have a sea deck out there. you can t fly these planes until they are almost out of fuel and then have to turn around and go back because you only have a few minutes to search. we ve got to get a deck out there that has helicopters and that on it that can go for quite a few miles and so it would be a sea board airport. and then let s say even after they do all of that and they determine that this debris came from this plane, now they have to search underneath the water. the ocean in that part of the ....
