Returnal Update (May 3, 2021) - Patch Notes 1.003.001
A new hotfix is now available to download.
A new Returnal update shared by the developer, Housemarque Games, today and is now available to download.
Hopefully, Returnal didn’t have a rough launch in case of bugs or technical issues. That being said, for roguelike games, even the minor bugs could lead to big disappointments.

Returnal review: PS5 epic is beautiful, hostile, and not for everyone

Card image cap

The first run of
Returnal on PS5 didn’t last long. The crash of a spaceship on an alien planet. A swift attack by tentacled creatures. A fumble of buttons.
Die. Repeat.
The second run, thankfully, went a little better. Selene, the game’s protagonist, wakes up repeatedly after each death, doomed to repeat the same cycle of crashing her spaceship on Atropos, exploring its randomly generating labyrinth, and battling hordes of shrieking enemies.
Returnal is many things. It’s a third-person PS5 shooter with the structure of a roguelike. It’s an exploration Metroidvania game, but an arcade shooter at heart. It’s a horror game with cinematic trappings. And it’s really, really hard.

PS5's 'Returnal' Reviews Are Solid, But Some Critics Say It's Too Hard

Here's what critics are saying about Returnal, out tomorrow on PS5.

Returnal impressions: The opening hours offer more risks than rewards

Despite having an infinite amount of lives to solve the mystery behind
Returnal, many of the ones I’ve lost felt like the result of gambling at an unfair table.
Each death brings me back to where my journey began: alone, after crash-landing on an alien planet. To understand what’s going on and return to safety, I have to delve into the unknown, which leads to more death. Each new loop remixes the layout of the planet. No two lives end the same way.
I learn more about Selene, the marooned space scout who is just trying to find out why she heard a signal from her past, as I venture deeper into the dark labyrinths and desolate landscapes of

The A.V. Club is playing Returnal on Twitch

Fans of our
A.V. Club Twitch broadcasts might have noticed that we missed yesterday’s regular stream. There’s a very simple reason for that: We
really wanted to stream Housemarque’s new, beautiful, and brutal sci-fi roguelike
Returnal this week, and the embargo on video footage wasn’t up until today.
If you’re unfamiliar with
Returnal, don’t worry: We weren’t super clear on what the game was all about until we got our hands on it, either. What it’s all about, as it turns out, is the latest iteration on the tried and tested roguelike structure, dropping poor doomed scout Selene onto an extremely hostile alien world, running her ragged until she dies, and then starting the whole thing over again, hopefully with some new progression benchmarks unlocked.

New Returnal Trailer Focuses on Hostile Enemies
Housemarque’s
Returnal got a new trailer on Wednesday just a few weeks ahead of the game’s release to show off more of the unique kinds of enemies players will be up against. We’ve seen several previews of
Returnal and its features in the past, but this one might be one of the more convincing ones if you’ve been waiting to see what you’re up against. At least six different creatures were featured with some info shared about a few of them while some are much more cryptic than others.

Returnal Details Its Story in New Trailer

Returnal Details Its Story in New Trailer

Returnal developer Housemarque has released a new trailer for the upcoming PlayStation 5 video game that details the title's story. Up until this point, we had largely seen just gameplay footage focusing on the wild weapons and aliens that players will come across, but now we have some idea as to the narrative at the center of it. In short, players can expect a sci-fi action thriller about a recon mission gone wrong.
"Our story follows Selene, a Greek-American ASTRA deep space scout who is a complex and layered character that is driven to a fault, intelligent, and resourceful," the new PlayStation blog post from Greg Louden, Narrative Designer at Housemarque, reads in part. "For the first time in her career she goes against orders to travel to the alien planet Atropos to follow the “White Shadow” broadcast signal. Upon arrival she crash lands in an alien forest. Here she discovers the ruins of an alien civilisation filled with statues, gates, xeno-tech, and alien corpses. But she’s not alone. The planet’s surface is teeming with hostile creatures that attack Selene on sight, as well as other threats left by the world’s former inhabitants."

Returnal Story Trailer Reveals More Roguelike Goodness

Returnal Story Trailer Reveals More Roguelike Goodness
Developer Housemarque is back to talk more about upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal, starting with a new story trailer you can catch above. Expanding on some of the plot points we've caught glimpses of in previous pieces of footage, a few new scenes are teased alongside more fast-paced gameplay. It's shaping up very nicely, we have to say.
Then, over on the PlayStation Blog, narrative designer Greg Louden dives into the detail. He states that the studio's goal was with its first big-budget narrative was to ensure it doesn't compromise gameplay. "Instead it should rationalise, deepen, and blend with it." The goal is to make something you'll discover, replay, and then continue to think about it for days.

Sony shows off PS5 gameplay for Returnal at State of Play
Returnal at its June PlayStation 5 event last year. At today's State of Play event, further details of the game and how it played were shown off. A blog post about the same footage was also posted to the PlayStation blog.
You can catch the gameplay for the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive below 29 minutes and 44 seconds into the video:
Set on an alien planet, the game features a third-person perspective and fast-paced combat. A lot of the enemies that players will have to face can be seen in the clip. Each class of enemy has its own set of moves. Every time players die and rejoin the game, the map will change and they will spawn in a different location. Upon resurrection, they will also face different enemies in varying numbers to keep players on their feet.

It’s yet to be seen whether this is the only bonus for pre-purchasing the game or more will be revealed as we get closer to the game’s launch. Returnal Gets Brand New PS5 Gameplay Trailer, Details on Combat
Sony's slate of software for 2021 is looking amazing, and part of that is Housemarque's roguelike shooter Returnal. Today, a new trailer has been released, showing off a couple more minutes of gameplay from the PlayStation 5 exclusive.
The video shows off a variety of weapons and tools you'll be able to equip as you explore the hostile world of Atropos. In typical Housemarque style, your guns and abilities are all super flashy, and there look to be some really interesting weapon types. There are your usual go-tos, like a machine gun, but even that gets a sci-fi boost with alternate fire modes. The Electropylon Driver looks cool, firing off nodes that then outline an area of damage. The trailer also highlights some new environments, parasitic lifeforms that will alter gameplay, and mysterious alien artifacts you'll find in each run.

Returnal Aims to Haunt Players with a Slowly Unravelling Mystery on PS5

Returnal Aims to Haunt Players with a Slowly Unravelling Mystery on PS5
Share:
One of 2021's most intriguing PlayStation 5 titles is Returnal, the upcoming roguelike shooter from Housemarque. The studio's pedigree should be enough to get people excited; it's made some of the absolute best arcade action games in recent memory. However, what's most exciting about this one is that the team is branching out into new territory. Making responsive, satisfying action games is its bread and butter, but this is its first proper attempt to tell a meaningful story.
Speaking to GamesRadar, Housemarque's narrative director Gregory Louden and game director Harry Krueger discuss the advantages of telling a tale within the confines of a roguelike. "Returnal's dark sci-fi time loop setup is so exciting narratively for us because Selene, our deep space scout repeating the crash, allows us to add lots of hidden layers narratively that are uncovered through repetition," Louden says. He explains that, as you make more progress through the procedurally generated alien world of Atropos, you'll slowly learn more and more about both the planet and the main character.

New Returnal Trailer Highlights Its Combat

New Returnal Trailer Highlights Its Combat
While there has been a fair amount of information released recently about the upcoming video game
Returnal from developer Housemarque for the PlayStation 5, today the company has highlighted the game's combat and weapons specifically with a new trailer. While the game's weapons all start off a certain way, players can then further modify and upgrade them, stacking different traits to create unique methods of taking on enemies across the game's hostile landscape.
"The game features a number of base weapons that are augmented as you play," Housemarque Creative Director Harry Krueger says in a new PlayStation blog. "For example, the living Spitmaw Blaster weapon starts as a shotgun archetype you all know and love. As you progress, you’ll unlock and add on various Weapon Traits, each providing a unique gameplay modifier to the base weapon’s behavior. These Weapon Traits are custom tailored for each gun type – so your Spitmaw Blaster might gain exploding shells or generate acid pools upon impact; while the Electropylon Driver might extract extra loot from enemies, or generate shields for the player. These Weapon Traits will also stack, so the combined effects can lead to many surprising results that can have unique advantages and playstyles to explore."

The 2021 Consumer Electronics Show began today—virtually, of course—and during a video presentation Sony revealed new release date information about half a dozen games. But it didn’t announce these dates as you might expect. Instead, all the new info came from text that appeared at the bottom of the screen for only a few seconds in the middle of the video. But, good news: We have a release month for Square Enix’s mysterious Project Athia.
