In spite of the lack of the COVID-19 vaccine, our very own New River Valley Public Health District has remained one of the top performers throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia in terms of administering the designated vaccine doses received weekly.
My counterparts from across the state have asked me how a health district in Southwest Virginia could bring such an incredibly strong and efficient response to COVID-19 in the New River Valley.
When I speak with them they want to know what we are specifically doing, and how we are doing it, because they want to see if something similar can be implemented in their own localities. I explained to them that our community has a long-standing history of coming together in order to help one another and to get things done. ....

Northam Says More Vaccines On the Way, Promises Transparency; Updates from Across Virginia

Northam said part of the problem can be attributed to mixed messaging from federal officials in the previous administration.
“15 days ago, the outgoing federal Secretary of Health told states, ‘Open up eligibility to everyone 65 and older. We’ll send more doses,’ Northam explained. Then two days later, states learned that there were no more doses to release”
He added that Virginia has immunized over 500,000 people in a month – more than actual infections from the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. But, Northam said that’s not enough and the process will be more transparent going forward. ....

Waiting to get shot (by a vaccination needle)

Shot up lately? With a COVID-19 vaccine dose, we mean.
The Virginia Department of Health reported Monday that 458,472 have received first shots of the two inoculation dosage and 64,381 have had their full dosage of two shots.
Hospitals vaccinated 241,170 shots, 120,020 came from local health departments, 61,760 were administered at long term health facilities (nursing home and extended-care), 39,239 at medical practices, 46,457 by “other community providers” and 14,027 at pharmacies.
As of Monday, an average of 21,823 doses were administered daily.
The last time I received a shot for a widespread virus was one for polio back in the more than 60 years ago. Of course, we also had shots for smallpox and other illnesses too in those days. ....

1,000 Giles County seniors vaccinated at drive-thru clinic

“We are very grateful and very relieved,” said Mullis, a 77-year-old from Giles County.
Dose after dose, about 150 volunteers partnered with the county to vaccinate around 1,000 seniors 75 years and older, with help from Carilion Giles Community Hospital. They hosted a drive-thru clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Giles High School.
“Localities are going to have to step up and try to help I think through this process if we’re really going to get the vaccine out,” said Giles County Administrator Chris McKlarney. ....
