A more contagious strain of COVID-19 may be spreading rapidly through the Simcoe-Muskoka region, public health officials said Tuesday after testing showed 99 more people likely had a variant of the virus.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says another 99 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 likely have one of the virus’ variants, not the original strain. The unit says the majority of the cases are connected to an outbreak at Roberta Place, a long-term care home in Barrie where 46 people have died from the virus and more than 200 have been infected. TORONTO — Public health officials in Ontario are taking further measures to trace a more contagious strain of COVID-19 that's been found in a number of regions since it was first detected in the Toronto area a month ago.
