Voluntary assisted dying via telehealth is another step down a perilous path

In legislatures around Australia at present euthanasia is a staple item. It is vital that euthanasia legislation ought to balance the liberty of the invulnerable against the safeguarding of the vulnerable, especially the elderly and people with disabilities. By Hoa Dinh

The bullies circle around Margaret Court » MercatorNet

CARTOON BY BRIAN DOYLE
Earlier this week there were volcanic eruptions of bile on Australian Twitter accounts at the news that the “homophobic” tennis legend Margaret Court had been made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), the country’s highest award.
Court is one of Australia’s greatest sporting heroes. In the 1960s and 70s she won 24 Grand Slam women’s singles titles, 19 Grand Slam doubles titles, and 21 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. After retiring from professional tennis, she found God and became a Pentecostalist pastor in Perth.
Court brought to her preaching the same vigour she displayed in her sport. She campaigned against the legalisation of same-sex marriage and has criticised homosexuality and the transgender movement. “I believe implicitly in what the Bible tells me,” she said in 2016. “I do not cherry pick to be popular. God has made his feelings clear, and they are my feelings, too.”

'Bad theology kills': Senior cleric returns honour over Margaret Court decision

A church leader says Margaret Court’s “bad theology” is his reason for joining the growing list of Order of Australia members who are returning their awards in protest against her elevation to the country’s highest civilian honour.
A number of recipients, including retired broadcaster Kerry O’Brien and acclaimed artist Peter Kingston, have either returned or refused awards and others say theirs have been tarnished.

MARGARET COURT
Time to enhance, not diminish our honours
Like many, I was saddened by Margaret Court’s AC. Court has already received an Order of Australia award recognising her service. As with at least two of last year’s awards she is a controversial figure with loudly advocated extremist opinions, hurtful and socially damaging to many, and certain to provoke Australians who value diversity, tolerance and non-extreme views. Is the Council for the Order of Australia insensitive, or deliberately provocative?

Order of Australia honours are a shameful embarrassment

The Order of Australia is a reflection of where this country is – and that should make us embarrassed and ashamed. It’s not just that there aren’t enough women and no clear indication of whether we recognise First Nations people, points clearly made by Jacqueline Maley and Nigel Gladstone in the
Good Weekend. It’s not just that one of Australia’s top homophobes and former tennis player Margaret Court has been given our highest honour. It’s not just that men’s rights “advocate” Bettina Arndt was awarded one last year – and got to keep it. It’s not even that there are a host of awardees you’d prefer to avoid in a dark alley. Let me remind you of what Shane Stone, the chair of the Council for the Order of Australia, said last September: “Short of a criminal conviction, we are not going to be arbiters of what people can or can’t say.”
