There’s an exhibition on display at the Elliott Museum in Stuart that features some of the greatest artists in Florida history.

The Florida Highwaymen, which included painters like Howard Newton and Alfred Hair, were 26 Black artists who resisted Jim Crow law with their art.

They were Black self-taught artists from the segregated parts of Fort Pierce, Vero Beach — and surrounding rural communities, disenchanted by the idea of picking fruit.
