Chairwoman Michelle Francesconi and challenger and former selectman Ronald DeAngelis won seats on the Select Board during Cheshire's annual town election on Monday. The lone ballot question making the tax
A Select Board race and ballot question highlight Cheshire's annual town election in May. Former Selectman Ronald DeAngelis will challenge incumbents Michelle Francesconi and Mark Biagini for two, three-year terms
The small town has traditionally held the parade through town and up to the cemetery on West Mountain Road with veterans, town and state officials, police, firefighters, Shriners, children on red-white-and-blue decorated bicycles and the Hoosac Valley High School band.
Like so many events of the past year, Memorial Day was silent in 2020. But with Gov. Charlie Baker's lifting of capacity limits and mask wearing outdoors as of May 29, town officials are hoping for a parade this year on May 31.
The Board of Selectmen took up the issue at Tuesday's meeting. In light of the updated COVID-19 guidance from the state, Chairwoman Michelle Francesconi noted that Cheshire had the opportunity to host a parade on Memorial Day. Board members pushed for the parade to happen, saying it would be nice to give Cheshire residents a "sense of normalcy" after the year of pandemic restrictions.
Duval and Rosenberg were the clear winners in the town election with both collecting more votes than the third candidate and former selectman Donald Sommer.
There were no other races in Adams and open seats were either filled by incumbents or candidates running unopposed.
Around 1 p.m. in Adams, just over 450 of the town's 6,084 registered voters had cast their ballots.
In Cheshire, there were two open selectmen seats, and Raymond Killeen and Shawn McGrath were the top vote-getters. Killeen received 252 votes and McGrath received 244 votes. Candidate Michael Biagini Jr. received 158 votes.
There were no incumbents running for selectman in Cheshire. Selectman Ronald DeAngelis did not run for another term and Robert Ciskowski resigned from the board earlier this year.
CHESHIRE, Mass. — The town will move toward making the town clerk and tax collector positions appointed instead of elected.
During a budget discussion Tuesday, the Selectmen voted to place an article on the town meeting warrant that would change some town clerical positions from elected to appointed.
The discussion arose from Town Clerk Christine Emerson's budget presentation. She added in a $10,000 line item to hire an assistant who she can train to replace her in the three remaining years she wishes to work.
"My plan is to serve the town of Cheshire for 30 years, but in my next three years, I want someone that I can teach so when I do leave, someone is not just walking in," she said. "That is how I came into the job. I was appointed then was elected town clerk the following May. The rest is history."
