The Everett School Committee has historically been less than competitive over the years in political races, but the cap has seemingly been removed from the bottle this year, and not only are there several contested races, but as of this week there will be at least one Preliminary Election contest for School Committee, and likely two. On Monday, Ward 6 School Committee was assured a Preliminary on Sept. 21 when incumbent Member Tom Abruzzese and current Ward 6 City Councilor Michael McLaughlin were certified for the ballot – joining already-certified Catherine Tomassi Hicks. “That’s the ...

Even After Moving, Tech Issues Plague City Council on Monday – Everett Independent

For more than an hour, the Everett City Council appeared to have been taken over by Martians, aliens or the lollipop kids – with technical issues taking over the meeting and making every councilor and presenter appear to have a very high-pitched and electrified voice. It was nothing new for the Council, which had experienced numerous technical difficulties over the last year when holding meetings at City Hall, but it was unexpected as the body had moved to the School Committee Chambers in Everett High School. The School Committee has met there successfully for months with no issues, but on ...

Steinberg Pulls Nomination Papers for School Committee – Everett Independent

Everett’s Cady Steinberg got the bug to run for School Committee at least two years ago after attending a School Committee meeting, a meeting where she went to defend her sister-in-law – a teacher in the Everett Schools – but was told she couldn’t speak publicly. That ignited a spark in the Everett Public Schools product, who now is the administrator for the Boston University History Department, that finally grew into a real run for the Ward 2 School Committee seat this year. “This is really two years in the making,” she said. “I thought about it two years ago. The reason I didn...

All three candidates for mayor have pulled Nomination Papers this week – as Papers officially became available on Monday morning – and some surprises have already emerged, such as Councilor Michael McLaughlin announcing he won’t run for re-election to the Ward 6 seat and is currently keeping his options open. Other immediate surprises – as of Tuesday at noon – were School Committeeman Allen Panarese filing for Councilor at-Large; At-Large Councilor Wayne Matewsky filing for Ward 1 Councilor; Council Clerk Mike Mangan filing for Ward 4 School Committee; and Bernie D’Onofrio re-ente...

Council Votes for Term Limits – Everett Independent

In a vote, 7-3, the City Council on Monday approved a Home Rule Petition to the State Legislature that would change the City Charter to enact term limits on Councilors, School Committee members and the mayor. The measure came somewhat out of the blue by Councilor Anthony DiPierro two weeks ago, when he introduced it at the April 26 Council meeting. However, such a thing has been discussed for several years off and on. Those voting against the measure were Councilors Fred Capone, Gerly Adrien and John Hanlon. Those voting in favor were Councilors DiPierro, Rich Dell Isola, Rose DiFlorio, Jimmy...
