Motorists were urged to take care driving through Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast hinterland on Wednesday morning as a thick fog covered the region.
The weather bureau issued a warning for the Brisbane area just before 6am, saying reduced visibility in fog would “make road conditions dangerous” during the morning.
There were heavy delays southbound on the Bruce Highway with traffic backed up from North Lakes to Burpengary following several crashes, with a trip from Caboolture to Brisbane estimated to take 90 minutes.
Forecaster Rosa Hoff said it was a similar story for the Sunshine Coast hinterland and Gympie but the coastal strip was mostly clear.

Some south-east Queensland beaches have been closed as hazardous surf and swell conditions batter the coast.
Kings Beach, Mudjimba Beach, Main Beach and North Stradbroke Island were closed on Tuesday morning, with Surf Life Saving Queensland urging people to stay out of the water.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rosa Hoff said the weather could be hazardous for rock fishing, boating and swimming.
“There is a south-easterly swell being caused by a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea, with a deep low pressure system north-east of New Zealand causing the water to travel to Queensland beaches,” she said.

Sunshine Coast residents can expect blue skies to turn to grey for the week ahead as rain and possible thunderstorms are forecast.
The weather bureau predicted a 60 per cent chance of showers for the region on Wednesday, most likely during this morning and afternoon.
Forecaster Rosa Hoff said there was a wider possibility of rain from Fraser Island down to the southern end of the Coast.
"We're forecasting between about 1-10mm of rain, some locations could see 15mm," she said.
Isolated falls could bring rain totals of about 20mm, but Ms Hoff said it was "much more likely" offshore.
