New Oldbury ambulance hub plans approved

A HUGE new West Midlands Ambulance Service hub will be built in Oldbury after planners gave the scheme the go-ahead.
Sandwell Council approved a proposal for a 7,725 square metre headquarters on disused land off Shidas Lane, which was originally submitted in December last year.
The three storey building will provide a home for many WMAS functions with a call centre, training facilities, storage and car parking spaces. More than 450 people will be working from the site on a shift basis.
Officers used delegated powers to grant permission which will allow the scheme to move forward.
An officer report said: “On balance, I am of the opinion that the proposal is acceptable in this location.

Plans for new ambulance service hub off Shidas Lane in Oldbury

West Midlands Ambulance Service wants to build a base on empty land off Shidas Lane in Oldbury.
The vacant site is opposite Sandwell Council's tip.
If plans get the go-ahead the building would have 365 parking spaces and would home West Midlands Ambulance Services Operations, Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the service's training and distribution functions.
The proposal from WMAS
The application to Sandwell Council states: "West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust (WMAS) serves a population of 5.6 million people covering more than 5,000 miles 2 made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation.
"As the region’s emergency ambulance service, WMAS respond to around 4,000 ‘999’ calls each day.
