Riday, Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS presents “Bel Canto,” based on one of Ann Patchett’s most famous books. The story, published four months before the 9/11 attacks, portrays redeeming qualities of humanity. It depicts a life-threatening scenario caused by terrorists holding international dignitaries hostage at Peru’s vice-presidential mansion and evolves into quite unexpected bonds and relationships.

In 2014, the Chicago Lyric Opera commissioned Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez to use the book to create a new opera, with a libretto by Pulitzer prize- winning playwright Nilo Cruz.
