Roxham was always a popular crossing point for asylum seekers, but traffic skyrocketed when new refugee restrictions were announced in 2017.
LACOLLE, Que. — The last RCMP building came down Monday at Roxham Road, which became an unofficial border crossing used by more than 100,000 migrants crossing into Canada from Upstate New York to apply for asylum since 2017.
The unofficial crossing was shut down in late March after the U.S. and Canada closed a long-standing loophole in the 2004 Safe Third Country Agreement.
On Monday, demolition work will start on the last RCMP building on Roxham Road, which gained prominence — and notoriety — with the surge of irregular migration to Canada, spurred by U.S. President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration agenda in 2017.
