Beauden returns to happy hunting ground for career-best win in Awapuni Gold Cup

Beauden and rider Ryan Elliot clear out in the Awapuni Gold Cup on Saturday.
Awapuni has been the happiest of hunting grounds for Beauden, who returned to his favourite track on Saturday for a career-best victory in the Gr.2 City of Palmerston North Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m).
It was the 11th win of a 36-start career for the Bullbars gelding, who has been near-unbeatable at Awapuni – eight of his victories have come from only 10 appearances at the Palmerston North track, including the last two editions of the Listed Marton Cup (2200m).
Saturday’s win was the best of the lot. Up against a quality field that featured this season’s Group One winners, Callsign Mav and Royal Performer, along with high-class performer Prise de Fer, Beauden dropped back to second-last as Hunta Pence led the field through most of the 2000m journey.

One of the curses of Melody Belle's career has returned "at a less than ideal time" heading into today's A$1.5 million Tancred Stakes in Sydney.
That is how trainer Jamie Richards describes the 14-time Group 1 winner tying up after trackwork on Wednesday, just days out from her latest Group 1 target.
Melody Belle was passed fit to race by Racing NSW vets yesterday, and Richards says while muscle tie-up is nothing new for her, it is an inconvenience she could do without when stepping up to 2400m today.

The horse who ruined the Melody Belle party at Te Rapa on Saturday wasn't even supposed to be in the race.
Former Hong Kong galloper Royal Performer stunned punters by bolting away with the $400,000 Herbie Dyke Stakes, New Zealand's richest weight-for-age race, after a beautiful ride from Jonathan Riddell.
The eight-year-old never left the fence and dashed clear halfway down the straight with The Chosen One rocketing home into second ahead of On The Rocks.

British-bred Royal Performer makes surprise Group 1 breakthrough | Bloodstock News

British-bred veteran Royal Performer, by the late Cheveley Park stallion Medicean, provided quite an upset by landing Saturday's Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes at Te Rapa.
Certainly Royal Performer has a few stories to tell, having been bred by Lady Legard out of ex-Juddmonte Polish Precedent mare Quadri.
Related to some minor winners, he was actually offered as a yearling at an Ascot sale in November 2014 but was bought back for just £600 and began his racing career under the name of Turn Tide for David Brown and John Fretwell.
A winner of three of his five starts in Britain, as well as finishing fourth behind future Classic winner Galileo Gold in a novice race at Haydock, he was bought for Hong Kong and appeared as Royal Performer for Casper Fownes.
