A meteorite weighing 17 pounds was found in Antarctica after the cosmic cannonball spent thousands of years in blue ice. Read about this cool discovery here.
On a recent expedition to Antarctica, researchers discovered five perfectly-preserved meteorites that have likely been hiding beneath the ice for thousands of years.
"The bigger a sample size we have of meteorites, the better we can understand our Solar System, and the better we can understand ourselves," an expert said.
Researchers estimated that of the roughly 45,000 meteorites retrieved from Antarctica over the past century, only about 100 or so are this size or larger.
