SAN DIEGO There were times when Safia Haidari and her family didn’t know where to turn to get help with her Type 1 diabetes. For years after she was diagnosed with diabetes at age 8, Haidari’s family had trouble locating the right doctors and pharmacies. They had come from Afghanistan and were covered by Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid health care program, but they had difficulties getting help navigating the health care system. As she grew older she faced some of the same issues. Now 25, Haidari, who lives in San Diego, said she found the whole health care process intimidating until recently. ....
The program idea was proposed by County Supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer and Nora Vargas. Supervisor Lawson-Remer emphasized the need for the program with, “We’ve supported renters and small businesses, and now we are adding San Diego County’s youth to the list of people who we want to help during this pandemic. Mentors helped me flourish as a young person, but if I were growing up in isolation during a global pandemic I don’t know if I would be so lucky. At a time when opportunity and social interaction has disappeared for many students and entry level workers, this youth corps will help young people jump start their careers with paid positions to help them get a foothold in the green economy.” ....
SAN DIEGO The San Diego-based nonprofit Youth Will is changing its leadership from one executive director to a youth-led model that puts two 24-year-old policy coordinators at the helm. Youth Will, which focuses on civic engagement and mobilizing youth, will be led by Warsan Artan and Safia Haidari. The two will be mentored while leading the nonprofit. Youth Will serves San Diego County residents who are under age 25. It provides informational meetings, leadership sessions, ambassador programs and referrals to social programs. As new co-leaders, Artan and Haidari said they plan to expand its programs for young, low-income residents and to enhance youth leadership opportunities across San Diego County. ....
