Disgraced former MP Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul will have to serve three more years in Kuwaiti jail for human trafficking and money laundering.

An appellate court in the Middle-Eastern country extended his jail term to seven years, local newspaper Al-Qabas reported on Monday.
It also sentenced Kuwaiti MP Salah Khorshid, who was acquitted of charges of taking bribes from Shahid, to seven years in jail.
Another Kuwaiti MP, Saadoun Hammad, was Shahid’s co-accused in the trial. The appellate court upheld Hammad’s acquittal.
It extended the sentence of Major General Mazen Sheikh Mazem Al Jarrah, former assistant under-secretary of the interior ministry in Kuwait, and two other Kuwaiti officials to seven years from four years for abetting the former Bangladeshi lawmaker’s unlawful work.

Laxmipur lawmaker Kazi Shahid Islam alias Papul has lost his seat in parliament in light of his conviction for money laundering and human trafficking in Kuwait.

Parliament Secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan said a gazette has been issued to declare his Laxmipur-2 seat vacant, effective from the day the verdict was announced.
The gazette stated that Shahid Islam had been stripped of his parliamentary seat in line with Article 66 of the Constitution.
Article 66 provides that a person shall be disqualified for election as, or for being, a member of parliament who has been, on conviction for a criminal offence involving moral turpitude, sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years, unless a period of five years has elapsed since his release.

Parliament has received copies of the verdict by a Kuwaiti court jailing MP Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul for human trafficking and money laundering.

“Parliament has received the verdict copies. We’ve begun working on them. The speaker will take the final decision on the matter,” Parliament Secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan said on Friday.
“A decision will be made in line with the constitution and parliamentary rules of business after reviewing the judgment,” said Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said at a programme that the 61-page verdict was in English and Arabic.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Friday said the government has recently received the copy of verdict of MP Kazi Papul’s conviction in Kuwait in a case related to human trafficking, residency visa trading and money laundering.
“We have received the 61-page verdict copy from Kuwait government and it has been sent to the home ministry and parliament,” he said assuring that the action will be taken against him as per law of the land.
The foreign minister made the remarks while talking to journalists after attending the opening ceremony of “WE COLORFUL FEST 2021” organised by Women and E-commerce Forum at Purbachal Club in the capital.

A Kuwait court has sentenced Bangladeshi lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul to four years' imprisonment on Thursday.
The criminal court headed by Counselor Abdullah Al-Othman handed down the verdict on a human trafficking case. It also fined the Bangladeshi lawmaker 1.9 million dinars.
Ataul Gani, general secretary of the Awami League's Kuwait chapter, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
However, Salina Islam, wife of the MP and also a reserved seat lawmaker, said she was still unware about the verdict.
Kazi Papul, an independent lawmaker from the Lakshmipur-2 constituency, was arrested in Kuwait on 6 June.

A criminal court in Kuwait has sentenced Bangladeshi MP Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul to four years in jail for trafficking human and laundering money.

Judge Abdullah Al Osman delivered the verdict on Thursday, according to the Kuwaiti media Al-Qabas and Al-Rai.
The court also jailed Major General Mazen Sheikh Mazem Al Jarrah, former assistant under-secretary of the interior ministry in Kuwait, and another Kuwaiti official for four years for abetting the Bangladeshi lawmaker’s unlawful work.
All the convicts have been fined 1.9 million Kuwaiti dinar each.
