City of Salina mask mandate stays in place after split 2-2 vote

After a 2-2 vote, the mask mandate for the City of Salina will continue.
As it was a topic that concerned many of the citizens who attended the Salina City Commission meeting Monday, the discussion on the mandate was moved up to the first action item of the agenda.
The commission heard an update about COVID-19, including infection rates and vaccination rates, from Saline County Health Officer and Health Department Director Jason Tiller.
Several people in attendance at the City-County Building and at the meeting online voiced their opposition to continuing the mandate while others attending online asked the commission to continue with the mandate.

Saline County Health Officer gives update on COVID-19

County health officer Jason Tiller updated the Saline County Board of Commissioners on the status of COVID-19 in the county, including some information about the county receiving vaccines for the novel coronavirus.
As part of the county's resolution on the topic, the commission revisits the mask mandate every two weeks and receives an update from Tiller.
Tiller said that in the 24 hours after his update to the commission two weeks ago the health department was notified of eight additional deaths related to the disease.
"Thankfully though, the number of deaths has tapered of since then," Tiller said. "I will be happy when we can be able to report again that we've had no new deaths in the reporting periods."
