Change Dixie State name, 65% of focus group participants say — but don't call it Deseret

ST. GEORGE After 47 focus group discussions to consider a possible name change for Dixie State University, 65% of participants support a change that does not include the name Dixie, according to results released on Wednesday.
A name that includes Utah emerged as the top theme among six presented to focus group participants. The least favorite theme, by far, was Deseret.
Sounds strictly like a religious school, one participant said.
I m an active Latter-day Saint, and I think it s a terrible idea, said another.
Others said it looks like a typo while another said it would be an immediate turnoff, maybe even more than Dixie. ....

Survey shows preference for Dixie State's current name. Other top choices? St. George and Deseret State universities

ST. GEORGE Nearly 47% of respondents to a recent online survey prefer Dixie State University s name as is.
According to aggregate results of the survey commissioned by the university revealed Wednesday, Dixie State emerged as most commonly selected name followed by St. George University, Deseret State University, Red Rock University, the Utah Institute of Technology and Utah s Dixie University.
Others were Pioneer State, Trailblazer, Greater Zion and Utah Polytechnic universities.
The survey identified six name types recommended for focus group testing: St. George, Dixie, geologic, academic mission, Deseret and Utah.
Julie Beck, a DSU trustee and chairwoman of the name recommendation committee, expressed gratitude for the community s overwhelming response to the survey, which was completed by nearly 14,500 people. ....

ST. GEORGE, Utah â Dixie State University will open a public survey Thursday as the university moves forward in its name exploration process.
The survey is a way for the [Name Recommendation Committee] to collaborate with residents of southwestern Utah, institutional partners and university faculty, staff, students and alumni, as the Utah State Legislature outlined in House Bill 278S01, Name Change Process for Dixie State University, a news release from DSU says.
The survey, which will close on April 13, will ask public participants to rank factors and themes for the new name and provide a place for new suggestions not already included in the survey. ....
