Farewell, possum! Barry Humphries, the comedian best known for his character Dame Edna Everage who blossomed from an Australian suburban housewife into a self-described “gigastar,” died today.
The 89-year-old was re-admitted to hospital on April 19.
A family statement issued to the Sydney Morning Herald thanked fans and hospital staff for their “support and good wishes”.
Humphries had remained an active entertainer, touring Britain last year with his one-man show “The Man Behind the Mask.”
The enduringly popular Australian has died at the age of 89.
