Surfside official Jim McGuinness had strong critics in Holmes Beach

McGuinness, whose actions in Surfside are sure to be further scrutinized in the weeks ahead, was the Building Official in Holmes Beach from 2015 to 2019. By the time he resigned, reportedly while being disciplined, he had strong critics, among them former city commissioner Pat Morton.
“He was a lot of talk,” Morton said. “I was very unhappy with him. I think he had too big of an ego if I’m being straight and blunt.”

He recently reiterated that position, according to media reports.
Any state push for requirements for condo inspections would come during the 2022 legislative session that begins in January and would likely not take effect until July 2022.
Arroyo told the Herald-Tribune he plans to get ahead of whatever happens at the state level and look into the possibility of tailoring a local law to the specific needs of Sarasota. ....
