Trees removed near Humboldt Broncos bus crash site

SASKATOON --
The third anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash is approaching and the area where it  happened looks a lot different.
After the April 6 2018 crash where a semi collided with the team's bus killing 16 people and injuring 13 others, the province worked with an engineering firm that made over a dozen recommendations to make the intersection safer -- including removing a "shelter belt" line of trees next to a home located near the intersection.
Saskatchewan's highways ministry has now followed through on the recommendation.
"The ministry has expropriated the property and removed the shelter belt trees, and continues to work with the property owner on compensation," the Ministry of Highways said in a statement.

Vacant Prince Albert hotel re-opens as Indigenous-owned affordable housing business

PRINCE ALBERT --
A shuttered hotel in downtown Prince Albert has re-opened as affordable housing for students and people travelling for medical care.
The Cumberland Crossing Inn is owned by a Cumberland House Cree Nation company, Saskatchewan River Business Corporation, and Timanaska Development Corporation. Last year, city council unanimously approved their $900,000 bid to purchase the former Quality Inn.
The building will also house a restaurant, a 24-hour daycare and operate medical transportation.
Chief Rene Chaboyer said the project will provide economic stability for Cumberland House Cree Nation.
“We’re trying to push the envelope and be a trend-setting First Nation that can model (for) other nations,” he said. ”Do things that other nations didn’t think that they could ever do. There’s good things in the works. It’s truly a new beginning.”

Juno Awards cancellation still felt in Saskatoon one year later

SASKATOON --
Saskatoon was supposed to come alive with all the festivities the Juno Awards bring one year ago this week and the impact of the cancellation is still being felt in the city.
“We had a Juno showcase with a couple other bands and obviously any time there’s a Junos event, a lot of industry folk and a lot of bands are playing in the city,” said W3apons band member Tallus Scott.
Scott’s band did go through with their showcase performance, but it ended up being their last live event since the beginning of the pandemic.

Province buying more school PPE from 2 Saskatoon companies

SASKATOON --
The province says it is buying an additional four million medical grade disposable masks and 30,000 face shields from two Saskatoon companies for use in schools.
School divisions will receive the supplies by mid-March, according to a news release from the education ministry.
The medical grade disposable masks will be shipped directly to school divisions by Innovation Safety Supply.
The face shields are from Benchmark Personal Protective Equipment.
The supplies are being purchased using the $10 million allocated to the Ministry of Education by the provincial COVID-19 contingency fund for the purchase of personal protective equipment for schools.
