MSNBC Yasmin Vossoughian Reports August 29, 2021 20:04:00

Like that. these are not sustained winds. these are gusts coming through. i m a sizable guy, so to have wind blows me like, means it s pretty serious. the risk is trees coming down onto power lines, things like that. the good news here is that, unlike katrina and other storms, this moves fast which may mean there won t be as much saturation in the ground, which may mean as many trees may not come down, but with 140-mile-an-hour winds you ll get trees and signs coming down, power lines coming down. right now a quarter of a million people, at least, in this city are without power. that was the last count. that s about half an hour old. lots and lots of people without power in the city. ....

Getting ready to be deployed. intergy is the primary electric provider, and they issued a release saying the expectation for those in the pathway is probably three weeks, up to that, before electricity is restored again. that is an awfully long time. they re pulling people in from all over the country. some 16,000 linespeople to get out there and work. again, when it s safe to do so. but here s the most concerning part of all of it, the speed at which ida is now moving, it was going 15 miles per hour previously, now it s in the single digits, which our meteor meteorologists tell you makes them nervous. certainly, the more rain can accumulate. what s going on in new orleans and baton rouge, both of those areas are 20-plus inches surplus of what they would be. there s so much such saturation that this storm is staying stat whk it should be going down. once we get through the wind ....

Astronomical tide. i mean, astronomical in the sense that we have a very full moon. the highest tides you can have. that combined with the wind gives real risk of flooding along the coastline and interior flooding given the saturation of the soil. we could have 70, 80 80-mile-an-hour winds. that makes the trees a lot less secure. they go over. power goes out. let s get straight to cnn s brian todd in connecticut in gratin. brian, how are things looking where you are? well, boris, a growing sense of anxiety here. you heard the governor talk about a storm surge and tide. that is a big concern here. and, you know, one of the concerns also is these are heavily populated areas all along the coast of connecticut here, rhode island, massachusetts. another concern is we start to get hit with the early bands of rain from hurricane henri is that these are areas that are surrounded by water many of these towns. you have the river in xwrauten ....

Between 195 and 78. because of the rain band overnight and into this morning, some areas have recorded over eight inches in counties like middlesex and mercer. these different spots where they end up in heavy rain bands, they ll see significant flooding. we do know that s going on in parts of jersey. this reminds me, this storm in some ways, of hurricane irene ten years ago. i was in north carolina when that hurricane made landfall. the biggest story of irene, the biggest memories were in vermont, in new england, because of saturation, because of flooding along the rivers and streams of new england. this may be a similar story where flooding becomes a big headline a few days from now. back to the roof camera, you ll see sandbags as we drive by the south street seaport, some businesses putting out sandbags. the good news, no water coming up from the east river. i guess this is one of those days where no news is good news ....

Troops, i attended a briefing where we had urban search and rescue team, some coming from buffalo to work with us, really gives a sense of how people come together when have you a crisis like this and a storm like this. benjamin: communities come together. it s really important. what is your biggest concern right now? well, this storm isn t over yet. we are cautiously optimistic that we avoided the worst predicted impacts but this storms is in some ways breaking apart and we re going to continue to see heavy bands of rain, torrential rain at times. we ve gotten reports of localized flooding, heavy high winds still especially out on the east end and the concern is as this storm continues to dump rain through the night into monday morning, that that saturation combined with ....
