St. Peter's-Ellis Hospital Merger Raises Questions About Equity

4:05
An online forum held on the proposed merger of major Capital Region hospital networks St. Peter’s Health Partners and Ellis Medicine raised concerns about equity in health care.
On the session hosted by the Schenectady Coalition For Healthcare Access, participants talked about patient care and how the merger, announced in October, might impact the community. St. Peter s is part of Trinity Healthcare, one of the largest multi-institutional Catholic health care delivery systems in the nation.
Some participants, including reproductive rights advocates, worry the merger would compromise health care choices, especially for Black, brown and LGTBQ residents who may not be able to afford to travel outside their city or community for referral care. Glen Northern is with Catholics for Choice, a nonprofit organization that favors reproductive freedom. ....

SCHENECTADY A day after an outpouring of community concern at a forum on the proposed Ellis-St. Peter’s hospital partnership, an organizer said Friday she was heartened both with the public response and the hospital administrators’ willingness to listen.
The main point of contention is the potential impact a partnership with a Catholic hospital system would have on Ellis Medicine and the services provided at its various locations. Organizers and speakers alike both expressed concern about Catholic doctrine affecting reproductive care offered to patients and inclusion of the LGBTQ community. ....

Community raises concerns on hospital merger of Schenectady’s Ellis Hospital and Albany’s St. Peter’s
SCHENECTADY Amy Sarah LaMena had an ectopic scare several years ago. As a Catholic she knew she would have to choose between saving her life and continuing to be there for her other two children and having an abortion or continuing the pregnancy and possibly dying at the Catholic hospital where she sought care.
“As a Catholic the idea of abortion hurt, but not as much as the fear of my two young sons losing their mother,” part of her comment stated. “While I mercifully did not have to face that choice that day, I have thought about it a lot since. Catholic hospitals are only allowed to end a pregnancy through an ‘indirect’ abortion, via a salpingectomy (removal of the Fallopian tube). Will women h ....

American Atheists Praises NY Legislation to Ensure Hospital Transparency

Albany, NY–Today, the civil rights organization American Atheists praised New York Assemblywoman Nily Rozic and Senator Michelle Hinchey for announcing legislation that will improve healthcare and save lives.
This important bill ensures that New Yorkers have access to vital information about whether the hospital in their area provides the care they need prior to admission. The legislation will direct the NY Department of Health to collect a list of policy-based exclusions from each general hospital and to publish a list of the hospitals that have such exclusions, and the specific policy-based exclusions for each, on its website.
American Atheists joins New York Civil Liberties Union, the National Institute of Reproductive Health (NIRH), Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts, and Schenectady Coalition for Healthcare Access in supporting this legislation. By partnering with organizations and lawmakers, American Atheists has worked to introduce similar legislation in other s ....
