The child, young boy s oxygen tank. he is tethered to the rescuer. the rescue diver is able to kind of tug him along as they move through the water passage that still has current in it. all these boys have to do, prix s presumably, is breathe. explain the oxygen masks the kids are using. are they specialized for this? it is not what you and i would use on vacation, right? yeah. unlike the scuba or snorkeling mask that most of the public is familiar with, that would be really easy for the boys in a state of panic, or maybe just a constriction in the cave, to easily bump the mask off. also, they have to hold a regulator. if scuba diving, you hold a regulator, the device that puts oxygen in, in your mouth. that would be really easy to drop or lose, also. the mask they re using has a self-contained regulator. ....

You have the depletion of the oxygen. once the oxygen levels start to drop less than 16%, those boys are going to start to get hypoxia, they ll start to pass out. if they go to sleep, it s game over. i can t sum it up any more than that. the timing is critical, which is why they moved forward with the mission, extracting these boys using scuba. so the divers have to get in. the problem is you ve wasted no, you didn t waste. you ve expended a lot of the resources in extracting these four boys. now the time frame, the divers have to rest, they have to get everything back in place for the next phase. we re saying two or three days, okay. if another four boys come up, great, it proves it has worked. it s a task that most certainly had to be planned out well. there s element of, you know, nature has its call, and the boys are very key to this. that rapport that the divers built up with them, keeping them ....

Already has experience to get comfortable with going from a normal scuba mask and a separate regulator in your mouth to having everything combined into one and then add that component, the communications feature which is a wonderful feature to have in the masks. but the training curve, you know, for a teen that has or the adult that s never been on scuba to begin with and suddenly throwing them into something we don t begin to train with much before 30, 40, 50 hours worth of dive experiences as a emergency services diver. it s a big learning curve. it s a very fast one. obviously, the first four have taken to that challenge quite nicely. you know, cave diving for exploration or as an adrenaline sport that, is challenging enough. it has special challenges which you already outlined. but when you mix a rescue into it, i mean, how much different does that make the calculus? ....

Not just for those being rescued but for the emergency crew that s are out there. is this a much different situation than someone that s just out for an afternoon exploring a cave? most definitely. if i were in my recreational cave mode, i would have at least one if not two other dive partners diving with me. part of the cave training system is redupeating. you have nine lights all total. our breathing equipment, each much us has two regulators. so three divers cave diving would have six total the ability for you know, to utilize six different recollectors in case one failed we can go to a backup. now you re taking kids that have never been on scuba, the professionals that are working ....

Kids are in as they re starting to come out? yes, and it s impossible to predict what their shape will be. air lifting is especially dangerous if somebody has just come from scuba because they re now having very different pressures. if somebody does have to be air lifted, it really does make you wonder what resources did they need. but they really have to make sure they stabilize that airway and that breathing and that circulation before they transport that child. absolutely. because there s that issue of getting nitrogen essentially in your joints and muscles. i believe they still call it the bends. exactly. from that partial pressure change from the oxygen and nitrogen and everything we re breathing into our bodies. so what are the doctors looking for when these boys finally get out of there and arrive at the hospital? i guess you call it triage. yeah, so just like we do in the u.s., we have very extensive protocols for conflict cases like this. you don t want to miss anyth ....
