Lose power, it s no big deal. that s what s going to happen up and down the seaboard. some people will get hit by the trees, some won t. here s what we re looking at currently. the storm itself, honestly, does not look that impressive. this time yesterday, they were talking for a storm to be approaching the outer banks and making landfall, this is not that impressive. there s a lot of strong thunderstorms and heavy rain from the eastern north carolina coastline much the water is going to start ponding up. as far as looks go on this the west side of this very weak. if you re in raleigh, you re loving the radar. a lot of the heavy rain is going to miss you and get mostly in extreme eastern north carolina. the storm itself, you can t see it anymore because of the sun went down. the clouds will go up to new york city. even though the storm is down in north carolina, shows you how big the storm is. that s the legacy. going to take a long time to clear this out. about 36 to 48 hours from now ....

hurricane irene, now officially made landfall as a category 1 storm on the east coast of the united states. the most up-to-date satellite image we can show you now of re irene, showing wear and tear, described as sloppy, not very well organized but starting to get more disorganized. you can see it there, it was a more organized storm over the past couple of days but as it s making landfall now and making its way up the east coast maybe not so much so. it has been lashing out at the carolina shoreline for the past several hours. that is where, again, it it has officially made landfall. the storm surge there is expected to take a toll on outer banks and coastal communities. concern shared all the way up and down the east coast right now. more so in cities you can imagine that aren t used to dealideal ing with hurricanes, like new york city. been some time since they ve had to deal with a direct hit from hurricanes. this storm could be head toward parts of lower manhattan, ....

When the storm hits the main land, it gets away from the water. it deintensifies. maybe it s a good thing. it does. but the upper air pattern is so ripe for this storm to stay healthy. the water is so warm off the seaboard that you are going to continually bring in a lot of warm, moist air into the center. yes, it s going to weaken from a category 3 or 4 down to a category 2 or 3 and let me explain, that s what eick was in houston, texas. so, if you are dealing with wind gusts 100 miles per hour out of the southeast in atlantic city because it s going up to the west, or in long island, you are dealing with something you haven t seen. you get big wind gusts out of the northwest, it s one thing. but when they are coming off the ocean, it s a completely different thing. so, this is almost unprecedented. like i said, in our lifetime. bill: all right. so everybody on the east coast has got to batten down the haches. put the wood over the windows if you are on the coast. get the supplies ....

wolf blitzer is off tonight. i m joe johns. you re in the situation room. i cannot stress this highly enough. if you are in the projected president of this hurricane, you have to take precautions now. don t wait, don t delay. we all hope for the best, but we have to be prepared for the worst. we how is it going in new york right now, mary? you just heard the president speak about this hurricane. new york had asked the president to declare emergency assistance. and the president did have an emergency declaration for new york, meaning the city and state will get federal help. but this is an unprecedented move in new york today, joe. the mayor michael bloomberg has ordered iffer the first time mandatory evac yags in low-lying areas of new york. and this encome passes areas that affect between 200 and 300,000 people. this out of caution and concern about high water and heavy winds. earlier throughout the day, there have been some evacuations taking place in hospitals ....
