Mpiranya, the last major Rwandan fugitive was dead

He had been announced dead in 2006. The rumour is confirmed since Tuesday by DNA tests performed on his remains in Zimbabwe. Major Protais Mpiranya commanded the presidential guard during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. He was wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), which accused him, among other crimes, of murdering several political figures. The prosecutor of the UN mechanism that succeeded the ICTR confirmed his death yesterday, Thursday 12 May, in a press release, and presented in an annex a summary of the results of its investigations on the fugitive.
