The senior counsel said that on hearing the matter, the Supreme Court should have passed a reasoned decision as to why, in their view, the sedition law was bad.
It reflects an acknowledgement by the court of the vast ongoing abuse of Section 124A and the chilling effect it has on legitimate political speech.
"We welcome the Indian Supreme Court’s order to reconsider the sedition law, which has been used arbitrarily and widely against peaceful critics," the UN Human Rights said in a tweet.
