The Supreme Court recently reduced the punishment awarded to two persons convicted for causing a bus accident that led to 5 deaths and 63 injuries.
Terming it a publicity interest litigation, the Court dismissed the PIL while noting that the petitioner did not know the facts personally, and was not remotely connected to the accident.
"Although Sec106 is not aimed at relieving the prosecution from its burden to establish guilt of an accused, it applies to cases where chain of events has been successfully established by the prosecution", the Court said
