The Lazarus Group used two malware strains in recent attacks. (Source: Kaspersky)
The Lazarus Group, a North Korean advanced persistent threat gang, apparently recently targeted a national ministry of health and a drug manufacturer involved in developing a COVID-19 vaccine in an attempt to steal information, according to the security firm Kaspersky.
In its report, Kaspersky does not identify the two organizations that were targeted with malware.
While the group is mostly known for its financial activities, it is a good reminder that it can go after strategic research as well, says Seongsu Park, a security researcher at Kaspersky. We believe that all entities currently involved in activities such as vaccine research or crisis handling should be on high alert for cyberattacks. ....

The FBI is warning that fraudsters are exploiting the recent news surrounding the availability of COVID-19 vaccines to launch schemes to steal personal information and money.

Phishing email designed to look like a message from the New York State Department of Labor (Source: Abnormal Security)
A recently uncovered phishing campaign is spoofing messages from the New York State Department of Labor, claiming to offer $600 as part of a COVID-19 relief program, according to researchers at Abnormal Security. The goal is to harvest personally identifiable information.
This phishing campaign, which appears to have started earlier this month, may have targeted 100,000 Microsoft Office 365 accounts so far, the security firm reports.
The attackers are taking advantage of the current global health crisis by crafting a scam that revolves around the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact, the researchers note. So, a recipient of this email may be more likely to believe that the government is offering additional relief as the pandemic continues. ....
