Conway selectmen pitch noise ordinance


CONWAY — Selectmen Tuesday voted to ask voters this spring to enact a townwide noise ordinance that would regulate more than just short-term rentals. 
Short-term rentals have been a hot topic in town and there could be as many as 600 in town. Last year, selectmen decided the rentals were not permissible in the residential zone but held off enforcing a ban until new regulations could be put in place. Selectmen are gearing up to present voters with articles to implement such regulations this April.
A committee was created to make recommendations and they came up with five proposed warrant articles including the noise ordinance.  ....

Retired New Bedford Police Captain Richard Spirlet Passes Away
Richard Spirlet of Westport, who attained the rank of captain during a 36-year career with the New Bedford Police Department, died on Monday, Dec. 28 from complications of COVID-19. He was 78.
Spirlet joined the police force in 1971 and after patrolling the North End for five years, he became the department s first K-9 officer, initiating a program that still exists today.
In 1993, as a Sergeant, Spirlet started a Community Police Program and two years later received a regional award for its outreach with the public.
Spirlet later served as commander of the North End station and served as the police department s representative at New Bedford Housing Court, neighborhood events and government meetings. ....

• Rep. Sherman “Sherm” Packard (R-Londonderry) was chosen to serve as the next Speaker of New Hampshire’s House of Representatives. Packard’s selection came nine days after Speaker Dick Hinch (R-Merrimack) died as a result of COVID-19.
• Winter Storm Gail brought 3 feet of snow, which along with snowmaking, helped put down a good base for the start of the ski season.
• Michael Kukuruza of Conway, a former store clerk who was convicted of stealing nearly $7,000 from Cumberland Farms, lost his appeal before the New Hampshire Supreme Court.

Selectmen voted on firing Salem Town Manager

SALEM, N.H. –– Two selectmen want Town Manager Chris Dillon fired for cause, according to the recently released minutes of a non-public meeting. 
During an Oct. 19 non-public session via teleconference – during which Dillon was present – Selectwoman Lisa Withrow initiated the vote with support from Selectman Bob Bryant.
Chairman Michael Lyons, Selectman James Keller and Selectwoman Cathy Ann Stacey voted against the firing.
Further, Lyons and Keller voted against going into a non-public session at all but were outnumbered, leading to the hour-long private discussion.
Referring to prepared notes during the session, Withrow explained her disagreement with the manager’s handling of a highly critical audit of the Police Department from 2018. The debated report led to a dismantling of top-ranking officers, two of which were arrested this year and two others who have remained under investigation by the Attorney General for nea ....
