The Supreme Court of India has ruled that not all marriages require a public declaration or solemnisation | Latest News India
SC has overruled the Madras HC order, where it was held that "self-respect" marriages cannot be solemnised in secrecy.
The Court set aside a recent Madras High Court ruling which had held that lawyers cannot preside over such marriages in their offices or trade union offices and then issue marriage certificates.
Dravidar Kazhagam cadres staged a sit-in protest inside the Gobichettipalayam Joint Registrar office and explained to sub-registrar Gayatri that refusing to register the marriage is an offence under section 166 of the IPC.
Justices M Dhandapani and R Vijayakumar said the 'self respect' marriages conducted in lawyers' offices are invalid.
