Today In Johnson City History: April 17


April 17, 1868: The East Tennessee Union Flag printed a recipe for Cottage Pudding. “One pint of flour, two teaspoonfulls (sic) of cream of tartar, a little salt, a piece of butter as large as an egg, one cupfull (sic) of white sugar, one egg, a large teacup of milk with a teaspoonfull of soda, well dissolved in it. Bake a half an hour.” There was not a mention of if the oven was to be warm or hot, but the oven would have been in a wood-burning stove. No mention was made, either, of the best shape and size of pan to bake the Cottage Pudding in, nor the number of servings it would yield. ....

Today In Johnson City History: April 13


April 13, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported, “An interesting protracted meeting is now going on in the Presbyterian Church in this place. Considerable interest is being manifested by those in attendance, and we trust such good may be accomplished. The Church has no abler pastor than Rev. Dr. Waterbury, under whose superintendence the meeting is conducted.”
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough. The city was spelled that way on the masthead, but was spelled as Jonesboro in various places inside the newspaper.
April 13, 1899: The Comet reported, “Mr. S.C. Williams has tendered his resignation as city attorney, to take effect within thirty days. Mr. Williams has made a most efficient and zealous official, but as he is the attorney for other corporations, whose legal interests are antagonistic to those of the city. Mr. Williams decided that the only proper course for him to pursue was to resign. His successor has not ....

Crocodile tears over open lands?
City Council candidates Green, Haitz, and McCallister are shedding crocodile tears over their “exclusion” from the Outdoor Recreation Council’s questionnaire on public lands and recreation issues. As described in the Sentinel article on April 1 ,“candidates miffed by public lands discourse,” the ORC’s screenshot proves that the questions were mailed to all 8 candidates; only three chose not to respond.
Coincidentally, these are the same three candidates who chose not to participate in two well-attended online forums hosted by Western Colorado Alliance in February and March, even though they were invited repeatedly.
Mr. Green in his response to the Sentinel claims to have 25 years of involvement in public access through “Public Lands Access Association’ and “Citizen’s Access for Public Lands.” Google these organizations and you’ll find that they have little to do with public lan ....
