When i first got hired by goldman sachs, someone asked if i had questions? i said yes. how does a stock go from nine to ten. the guy interviewing me picked up a phone and said by 50,000 stride rite. take it to ten. it was at $9. because of that incredible rushed order it started moving and moving and moving. it s all about why someone buys something very aggressively or sells aggressively and how you can benefit. that s what happened with the flash crash. we went down 1,000 points in a couple minutes so orders overwhelmed the buyers. it s still about supply and demand. reading that part of your book, for someone like me who is not a stock expert, it was scary. you talk about washington and politics. you write that our stock market has had four separate run-ins with politics that cost a lot of money. the ratings agency downgrade, the fiscal cliff debacle. failure to avoid the federal sequester and what you call a pointless government shutdown. all told you say that dropped 8% ....

Unemployment insurance instead of chris christie and what alex just screamed in my ear. are re going to be able to find offsets to pay for unemployment insurance? this was bipartisan for a long time and frankly to me it s embarrassing that the senate of the united states can t find a responsible path forward to extend a hand to those jobless americans who continue seeking work. unemployment benefit insurance is a critical part of our safety net and keeps a roof over your head and food on the table for the 1.3 million who lost the federal portion of unemployment insurance recently. we should be able to come together and find a way they think we should pay for it and 17 trillion in debt and should extend these benefits but also pay for it. part of the disagreement this week the extension and whether to pay for it by extending the long-term cuts of the sequester or other short term cuts. my hope when we get back next week you think we can get a deal whether it s three months ....

They were uniformly weak. the number was so low, it s not consistent with all the other economic data we are getting. gdp has been a lot stronger and that has been going more strongly and the surveys have been stronger and retailing has been good. it doesn t make sense. i don t want to pay attention to it at all. the one thing i would wonder here is there was a prediction that the government shut down combined with the sequester would have a form of impact after the fact. the government was shut down for a couple of weeks in october and it takes a month or two to see the impact. is it possible we are seeing the impact. the timing is all wrong. they have seen it in october or november or december. it s across the board. it s everything. construction, manufacturing and a decline in the number of courier job that u.p.s. and fedex to ship online. ....

Because six republicans joined on. those republicans were demanding that any extension be paid for and offset in other cuts. these negotiators have come up with some of those paid fors or offsets. we are talking about extending the benefits until november of this year and cost about $18 billion. they would pay for that in various ways by extending part of the spending cuts or sequester and also by doing away with what s known as double dipping in unemployment benefits and social security benefits. they have been broken between harry reid and his colleague from nevada. they have included senators from rhode island. whether or not they can get on ....

Congress counts success as not breaking anything. if republicans were really concerned about paying for unemployment benefits, there are a number of ways that democrats would be open to. for the gop, it s a sophie s choice. you can have jobless benefits or health care. they would never dream of asking the folks riding high right now with record corporate profits and stock prices to help out. mcconnell s comments today has made me realize something else. we tend to talk about how the republicans have no agenda, nothing to run on in 2014, when that is actually not true. they have an agenda. no help for those who need it most. no jobless benefits. sequester forever and a return ....
