Police are continuing to urge the trucking industry to ensure heavy vehicles are up to scratch as an ongoing safety operation in Northland continues to find faults.
The operation, run by Police’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Team, Waka Kotahi and WorkSafe, is monitoring truck movements along State Highway 1 between Northport and Auckland and commenced last week.
To date, there have been 1201 heavy vehicles stopped with 222 failing their inspections.
This continues to be a fail rate of around 1 in 5 heavy vehicles stopped.
Twenty-two of these heavy vehicles have been given non-operational orders.

Police issue reminder to truckies following Northland vehicle operation

Police are reminding the trucking industry to ensure their heavy vehicles are roadworthy, following an operation focusing on truck safety in Northland which has found almost one in five vehicles tested failed its inspection report.
Last week officers from Police’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Team, Waka Kotahi vehicle compliance officers and Worksafe have been monitoring truck movements between Northport and Auckland.
The operation was in response to approximately 800 additional heavy vehicle movements expected over a week period with trucks carrying about 1200 containers between the two regions.
Vehicles were being checked to ensure they were roadworthy to mitigate any risk to the public on the roads.  ....

One in five trucks stopped in Northland police sting not roadworthy


Up to a dozen trucks loaded with Christmas cargo are leaving Northport in Whangārei every hour.
Almost one in five trucks stopped as part of a police sting in Northland were found to be unroadworthy.
In the first three days of the operation, 96 of the 534 trucks stopped failed their inspections - approximately 18 per cent of all trucks.
The operation, run in partnership with Worksafe, was in response to over 800 container trucks carrying Christmas cargo to Auckland after a container ship unloaded at Northport to avoid waiting weeks to get into the congested Ports of Auckland.
