By Sue Danielson Apr 16, 2021 (Independence, IA) -- Hundreds are paying their respects to Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith, who died after being shot during a Grundy Center standoff a week ago. Smith was a 27-year veteran of the Iowa State Patrol. He is the second Iowa State Trooper to be shot and killed in the line of duty. The visitation was held yesterday in Independence. The funeral got underway this morning at Independence High School. The man accused of shooting Smith, Michael Lang, is hospitalized in critical condition. He's charged with first degree murder. . Jim Smith A large crowd gathered today in the Independence high school gym for the funeral of an Iowa State Trooper who was shot to death a week ago during a stand-off with an armed man in Grundy Center. For more than half an hour, officers from all over the country saluted as they filed by Sergeant Jim Smith’s flag-draped casket. Paul Heppner, interim pastor at Smith’s church in Jesup, spoke of the trooper’s faith to start the service.
