To arrive at the conclusion that Fr Thomas Kottoor and nun Sephy had
murdered sister Abhaya in 1992, the CBI court has mainly banked on disturbance in the hostel kitchen,
Adakka Raju, a thief, had told the court that he had seen Kottoor in the convent building between 4 am and 4.30 am on the day Abhaya was killed. Raju was at the site until the 5-am siren and did not see Kottoor leave the location until he himself left.

28 yrs after murder of 19-year-old in Kerala, court finds priest, nun guilty

Hours after the order was passed, the two accused, charged under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) and on bail since 2009, were sent back to jail.
The CBI had named another priest, Father Jose Puthrikkayl, as the second accused but the court allowed his discharge petition before the trial, which began last year, citing lack of evidence.
“I had been waiting for this day. Truth has the final victory. I have been praying for the soul of my sister to get justice,’’ said Abhaya’s brother Biju Thomas, who is employed in the Middle East. Abhaya’s parents, Thomas Aikkarakunnel and Leelamma, died in 2016.

What happens when Kerala’s largest private sector employer brings a management style to panchayat democracy? More funds, villa housing, a subsidised market, stunning electoral success, and charges of veiled autocracy. Take a look at a unique initiative that is disrupting Kerala’s deeply entrenched politics — for good, and bad.

Kerala’s largest private sector employer, KITEX registered Twenty20 under the Charitable Societies Act in 2013 as fallout of a longstanding legal battle with the Congress-ruled Kizhakkambalam panchayat.
Kerala’s largest private sector employer, KITEX registered Twenty20 under the Charitable Societies Act in 2013 as fallout of a longstanding legal battle with the Congress-ruled Kizhakkambalam panchayat. In June 2012, the panchayat had refused to renew KITEX’s licence on the ground that it was contaminating water bodies from its dyeing and bleaching units, despite a High Court clean chit. Later, when the Kizhakkambalam panchayat also obstructed KITEX’s charitable activities and a fair held by it, Managing Director and Twenty20 Chief Coordinator Sabu Jacob decided that KITEX, a Rs 1,200 crore company, primarily into manufacture of garments, would itself contest the panchayat polls as part of its CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities.

Kizhakkambalam panchayat | Schemes, subsidies keep voters happy: ‘Can’t live on ideology’
The reasons for this astonishing performance are all around in the panchayat, with KITEX not just banking on government funds for schemes but also its own contribution, and CSR funds of other firms — filling a crucial financial gap in welfare schemes.

Others point out that many contractors too have backtracked from taking up projects in Kizhakkambalam, consequently ensuring that a majority of the works in the panchayat are done by KITEX’s own men.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protest the line of inquiry taken by central agencies probing the gold smuggling case in the state and sought his intervention to ensure that the “contours of Constitutional division of powers” are followed.
The letter, written on Wednesday, came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI, which are probing various aspects of the gold smuggling case since early July, began widening the scope of their probe, encompassing key projects and important figures in the state government.

In another panchayat Mauzhuvanoor, the Twenty20 has emerged winner in 15 out of 19 wards.
Kizhakkambalam has been the first electoral laboratory of KITEX Group. Given that it had a clear sweep in the panchayat elections in 2015, the CPI (M) and Congress fielded common candidates to defeat the corporate group’s nominee. Last week, when voting was underway, a group of men belonging to CPI (M) and Congress had attacked a couple, who work at KITEX Group, when they came to the polling booth to vote. The couple had votes in Kizhakkambalam panchayat and have been residing there for several years.
