1921年6月，尼克尔斯基受共产国际远东书记处委派，带着共产国际指示与经费到上海，与来自荷兰的共产国际代表马林会合后，与李达、李汉俊取得联系。1921年7月23日，尼克尔斯基、马林出席了中共一大，并在会前、会中、会后做了大量工作。
但是，1938年9月21日，尼克尔斯却被苏联共产党以犯“间谍罪”在哈巴罗夫斯克枪决。马林则在1942年被占领荷兰的纳粹枪决。
中共一大代表中，四人死于中共政敌，一人被中共整死。
邓恩铭，1931年4月5日，被中华民国山东省临时军法会判处死刑并枪决。何叔衡，1935年在福建长汀突围时，跳崖摔死。陈谭秋，1943年9月27日，在新疆迪化（今乌鲁木齐）被军阀盛世才秘密处死。
李达，1966年8月24日，被中共作为“混进党内的资产阶级代表人物和资产阶级的反动学术权威”，折磨致死。
