张青1924年2月出生在山西省长治县。旧中国，压在人民头上的“三座大山”让老百姓民不聊生，这在他幼小的心灵上留下了深深的印象。“西安事变”时，张青正在长治县第三高小读书。学
校组织学生们在集市上宣传抗日救国道理，这是他第一次参加抗日救国活动。
十四岁时投身抗日
1938年5月，张青作为长治县65个编村（抗日政府把长治县分成若干个编村）儿童代表之一参加了牺盟会召集的会议，被选为长治县儿童救国会锄奸部长。会后，他深入到编村学校，组织儿童站岗放哨、盘查路人，不让汉奸进村。半年后，组织上送张青去长治中心区政训队第二期培训班学习。在培训班学习一个月后，张青被派到长治县青年救国会任儿童部长。学习期间，张青还暗地里处决了一个与伪县警察局勾结 ....
