Unaware that you become like you are taken to another place. you kind of there is that moment where you re photographing people and you don t know if you can go through with it because you are seeing people at their weakest hour. you know, when it was all going down, it was very surreal. i was looking up at the building photographing the flames coming out and all of the sudden the building just you hear this rumble and it s coming down and you are looking through the view finder and just seeing the shards of the building getting closer and closer. and you are totally, you know, you are completely unaware until you see that it s coming closer and closer to you. i was about a city block and for me like firemen run past me and like run, run, run. and i ran into a music store that was right behind me. rachel: it was there that you ended up meeting someone, correct, that was you had this close relationship with that person since then. ....

Dedication to public service. it kind of like restarted my life. like, we ve always talked about a before and after 9/11. i think after that day i realised how important, a, community is, and, b, service is. kids now learn about 9/11 as a moment of history. they see the shocking videos, but do not have the lived experience. still, all around them are haunting reminders that the tragedy is not over. when the twin towers collapsed, lower manhattan was blanketed in a toxic cloud. and for months first responders and those who worked, studied and lived here, breathed in that air air contaminated by glass shards, asbestos and building materials. well, that lead to long term health problems. and so, 20 years on, the death toll from this tragedy continues to rise. rob serra s first day as a firefighter was on 9/11. 20 years later, he is still attending the funerals of fellow first responders three just last week. it took 18 years to get permanent legislation. he s angry that it took the us ....
