Barbara Freiberg for leading the pledge of allegiance. Good evening. Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, members of the legislature, distinguished guests, and my fellow Louisianans: I am honored to be speaking to you from the campus of Southern University. Thank you, President Ray Belton for your hospitality and to your entire team for helping us put this event together following current COVID-19 mitigation measures. I also want to thank you for sharing your campus with the public as a hub for drive through testing and vaccinations. Your efforts have been nothing short of tremendous. In fact, this weekend, the Southern System administered over 1,000 shots.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards held his State of the State address Monday, April 12, from A.W. Mumford Stadium on the campus of Southern University. Gov. Edwards, discussed several topics including advocating for lawmakers to raise the minimum wage, pay increase for K-12 teachers and support staff, Early Childhood Education and proposing an office within the governor’s office to fight human trafficking. Three Tupelo council races head to runoffs

TUPELO • Three city council races are headed to runoffs, with challengers trying to oust incumbents in Ward 6 and Ward 7 and two fresh-faces to local politics vying for an open seat in Ward 1. In Ward 1, Amanda Angle and Chad Mims will meet in an April 27 runoff. Ward 6 Councilman Mike Bryan will face challenger Janet Gaston. Ward 7 Councilman Willie Jennings will face challenger Rosezlia “Rosie” Jones. After Republican primary results were tabulated, nearly-complete but still uncertified results showed that in Ward 1, Mims nearly won the four-person field outright with about 48% of the vote, while Angle captured about 38%. Of the other Ward 1 candidates, Eric Hampton had about 8% and Megan Kessler had about 4%.
