Omaha s tight housing market continues to put the squeeze on many. But KETV NewsWatch 7 learned more on Monday evening about one plan to help. Sheltering Tree is working to provide affordable housing in Papillion to those with disabilities.For the last 19 years, Cody Randels has been living at home, learning skills like cooking, to help him be more independent.“Hot dogs, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets,” said Randels.Born with Fragile X Syndrome, the goal has been to have him live on his own someday.“What will happen to my child when I am no longer able to care for them?” said Kelly Coleman.Soon he will have that opportunity with Sheltering Tree, an organization here in Nebraska which builds communities for those with developmental disabilit ....

As head of the cold weather shelter, Bickings helps provide a warm place to spend the night and connects people to other services.
In the more than 10 years since Sue Bickings began working with homeless people through the Sheltering Tree Flagler County s only cold-weather shelter much has changed: The program has broadened and relocated, and, this year, COVID-19 has created new stresses for its guests.
There s an awful lot of people who are not able to pay their rent; they’re not able to pay their utilities  maybe they’re able to pay part of those things, Bickings said. Helping people with rent right now, that is the widespread need in this community. ....

Surge in people seeking shelter at City Rescue Mission
Due to low temperatures forecast expected to drop below 40º from Thursday and beyond, Jacksonville’s City Rescue Mission along with shelters in Flagler County and Gainesville will open extra beds for those without a warm place to spend the night.
The City Rescue Mission will increase its overnight capacity as well as extend its hours to those in need of shelter.
“We will not turn anyone away,” said Penny Kievet, CRM’s executive director. “We want to make sure that those without a home have a warm shelter and a hot meal.” ....

The Sheltering Tree will open a cold-weather shelter tonight, Thursday, Dec. 17, at the Church on the Rock, not only for the homeless but for anyone who is without heat.
Flagler County officials urge residents to take advantage of this option if the alternative is using a heating method that could pose a fire hazard.
“Space heaters need space  at least 3 feet  away from anything that can burn,” said Flagler County Fire Marshal Jerry Smith. “This space should also be a kid-free zone.” ....
