FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - First responders like paramedics are currently on the frontlines fighting to save people’s lives.
They’re fighting back against COVID-19 by receiving the first phase of COVID vaccinations.
“It protects not only us but the patients we come in contact with,” said Fabian Oden.
Oden works on the front lines with Shoals Ambulance and said he is set to get his vaccine soon. He says for him, getting this vaccine is about the patients he comes in contact with everyday.

Emergency service workers in the Shoals started getting the coronavirus vaccine on Wednesday.
At 7 Wednesday morning, Shoals Ambulance employees were up at the North Alabama Medical Center to get their vaccines.
For one paramedic, he said he can't wait to get vaccinated because this means better protection for his family while he's on the job.
"We can now protect our patients as well from us, so it's not all about us. It's about protecting others," said Shoals Ambulance Paramedic, Fabian Oden.

Shoals officials told WAAY 31 a directive from the state means police and firefighters won't get the Moderna vaccine next week like they initially thought.
Right now, emergency service personnel will be the first to get the vaccine. This means paramedics and anyone with an ambulance service.
For Keller Ambulance they already started getting the vaccine because they are connected with Helen Keller Hospital. Between Christmas and New Years is when Shoals Ambulance employees will get vaccinated. There is no time frame on when firefighters and police officers will get the vaccine.
