Any sicker. we have concerns whether their system is robust enough to catchall the cases as they come in. i m concerned about that. and olympic officials are set to make a final decision whether to let guests attend the games. they said it would be safest if there were no spectators, no fans. do you agree with that? i think at this point that probably is true. i think the only way to have spectators in a safe situation is, one, for them to be fully vaccinated. two, to have adequate ventilation within the arenas that they are using, and we know that neither of those things are really in place. it s not really safe to have a group of people gathered. we have to look at the will of the people here. most japanese people are saying this isn t a good idea. so i think we probably have to pull away from having wide spectators which again, is a shame. i love the olympics. i feel for the competitors that don t get to have the experience. ....

A recent report from the Epic Health Research Network shows that amid a steep drop in emergency department visits during the Covid-19 pandemic, there was an increase in the number of ED patients who needed to be hospitalized.

Emergency department visits plummeted during the Covid-19 pandemic, and new research now shows that the patients who did come to the ED for care were sicker and more likely to be hospitalized.
Researchers from the Epic Health Research Network analyzed weekly ED visit volume from Jan. 1, 2017, to Dec. 12, 2020. Gathered from 31 healthcare organizations, the data set also included patients who had either been discharged or had died by Jan. 10, 2021. ....

You for having me on. you know, one of the reasons we re discovering these in the uk is because they re doing really extensive testing of their viruses in a way that we are not. so, we don t know if it s in the u.s. or not. it is concerning that we have now several variants that seem to be spreading more easily. but we do need to start looking for it more aggressively here in the united states. and are children more susceptible to infection from these mutations that we re seeing? there s a lot we re still learning about this. it does appear from preliminary data that kids may be more susceptible to being infected. doesn t necessarily mean they re going to get any sicker. one of the highlights of this disease has been that kids don t usually get very sick. i think that will be true for this variant, as well. okay, dr. jha, thank you so much, as always. next tonight, we re on the front lines with paramedics at the epicenter of this pandemic right now, in orange county, california ....
